Fun removal

The job was to remove a large, triple trunked gangly big leaf maple, (one large lead had fallen across the earthen roof of the underground home) The GRCS winch made the job go smoothly, along with our excellent crew. We left a 25 foot habitat snag, which saved a couple hours of wood cutting,as the trunk was close to 5 feet dbh...
Got the tree done in about 7 hours with a crew of four. We were able to crash out much of the back side of the tree, onto a downslope and hide the brush in the woods. Had to swing much of the wood uphill to the LZ per the customer's request.

The setting was above a meandering waterway..(wetlands) and overlooking the snow covered Cascade Mt's Still 2-4 inches of snow around, but none in the work zone, thankfully.

Here's a slide show...video to follow...
Dave subs for me, but I'm bummed I didn't ask him to don his helmet.....doesn't look very profeshunul.....

Hi Roger,
Nice video and pictures as usual, it's always a pleasure and a lesson. On the flickr set, third picture in as the climber is rigging a long horizontal, I wondered how he cut the piece? A diagonal step-cut or was it more vertical? A maple (snappy), not in leaf (snappy) in the snow (S N A P P Y).
By the way, what is your still's camera, it finds good colour?

Nice work Roger, I hate rigging those maples. Definitely one tree I wouldn't want to think of being in without a hardhat. Here's a few that I just finished up at a kids camp here.

How's this for a tardy response....

Dave just let that limb hinge and tip down, prolly with some side swing to keep it clear of the garage. We had a fair bit of working room.

That day, I was using my excellent little Canon Pro 1. It's lens has a red ring, which means it uses some high quality LD glass like those of my several pro lenses for my 1D Mk 2 SLR. But those cost $750-2000 each.

nice pictures.

good job.

only two things I don't understand/agree with......

why when hinging off logs to be lowered, did the climber tie them so high? Causes more flipping around and harder on the rope and such. and if the groundman didn't for some reason let it run, much more violent movement and potential for harm. see my diagram. Why not butt tie them? There was more then one in the pictures, so it looks like it's something the climber does often. It's not like he first thought he'd crank the peice up, then changed his mind.

why would pissing from the tree be shown on the video? Just the personality of the crew I guess.

Other than that, NICE job.

(always easy to be a critic, especially when you're as good as I am.

Wow, guess I missed this, or was too lazy to comment.

With that tree, we were working on a slope and wanted to swing the logs into the landing zone....thus the high tie points to get em going the right direction. Plus, on a couple, we had probably cranked them up with the GRCS.....so, no "violent" movement...which is more likely to occur with butt hitching, actually...depending on the scenario, of course.

If you watch the video, you'll see one section that didn't swing properly into the LZ....and maybe not have been run right by the groundie either. I forget which, but it did drop a ways...and may have gone beyond the 10-1 safety factor of the rope's tensile....but surely not the industry standard 5-1 recommendation. A tag line would have helped on that one.....but we had to fly to get that huge tree done in a day!!

Did the large peel cuts snatch the saw out of the worker's hands?

[/ QUOTE ]

Huh? Only a rookie would allow himself to screw up like that. That would come from an inability to understand how to handle any given cutting procedure,

Not likely to happen with Dave.....

Na. I was just poking at ya, when I made that comment. Some prefer to make snap cuts or narrow faced notches (I'm in that catagory). Peeling branches out just seems to have less predictability as to what will happen.

But, what works for you guys...works too.

LMAO first class professionals all the way, wonder if it's common practice to just leak anywhere in the customers property. Shows full respect for others. Good thing he's a shortie or you might of seen the wang.

Thanks for the in put I learned alot.

Roger,I wouldnt be bummed at all about not asking him to don his helment!....... because everyone knows you cant piss threw a helment!!! lol.......and if I was a camera guy and saw someone peeing, regardless of if it was in a tree or not. I would NOT and repeat DO NOT film him from the front! WTF camera guy!

I liked the video, I have been wanting to get me one done, there are clips here and clips there that people have taken, but I'd love to have one like that, be proud the world is watching ya!
