FOLDING!-micro grapnel hook from toolbox ballast!

Here's a quick prototype of a folding micro grapnel hook for line retrieval, made from crap that I had in the bottom of my toolbox!

All you need is in the first pic.. at the bottom... (because I'm not sure how to put images where I want in my posts!..)...add extra shaped chain-link for four hooked version, or as many as you want/can fit through rubber grommets!)

Second image shows the two different sized rubber grommets, one used for for the 3 hook the other for the 4 hook, not sure what they are or where they came from!

Other photos show somewhat how it's made, goes together and folds. (...grinder, vice and bolt cutters needed, or whatever else works!)

It's nuttin' fancy but WORKS!

...am gonna put a lateral twist on the bottom hooks though, to better trap the line, and shorten up the top hooks a bit.

...(but not even gonna bother making a prettier one!! )

Here's a (far from perfect...) option to include a neodymium magnet!

Only a two hook version, as couldn't get 3 through the ring magnet, and as a result the rubber rings just don't grip quite well enough to keep the grapnel shape (sure there's a smaller one o those rubber thingies in my tool-box/truck somewhere!!.. I saw it not long ago!!!) also, the ring magnet is not really strong enough.

...Though not technically from my tool box, the magnet was from a music speaker that my son broke, and was holding a photo to my fridge... (and therefore 'free')

Great idea adding the magnet. Is this to retrieve climbing line out of reach? Do you just tie it to a bit of throw line?

It's actually my 'garden shed' attempt to combine two techniques for throw-line positioning & horizontally traversing through the canopy, or to another tree. Check out these videos for deets:

'seems' to fit the bill, (..I own one!!) but with all it's un-screwability, and little fiddley metal bars, combined with the price not including import cost, (.. as I live in France, and they sell NOTHING! here), makes me nervous to send it into the unknown! ...AND the magnet is not quite up to the job! I wanted a completely 'looseable' solution that can be opened/closed/attached to line with gloved hands and no fuss.

I have NO IDEA where the grommets came from or what they are for...but I have a handful of each size in my toolbox...same goes for two thousand other odds n ends in there!!!

I love the grapnel. @moss was the first I saw demonstrating it in a video quite some time ago. I was so SRT production mode that I never went that route, but it's more and more interesting to me now.

I have NO IDEA where the grommets came from or what they are for...but I have a handful of each size in my toolbox...same goes for two thousand other odds n ends in there!!!

Cable ties might even perform the same job!

I've been trying these techniques out a lot recently, (once up I'm drt) and have it dialled in quite well!.. (haven't yet needed it professionally though)

The trick for me will be stowing Throwline in a way that feels clean and out of the way. The need for traversing will be coming! It's either this or an Epple hook I was given by a friend. The Epple will require carrying more rope than I may want to.

Never tried any 'large' grapple hook techniques. Not trustworthy enough anchors once angles of force change etc as far as I can tell. I prefer to pass my line and swing across on that!... Also when it comes to climbing equipment, I prefer micro to macro.

I know!.. A dumb buy!
