Florida - National Public Lands Day Event

Morningwood and I have organized a day of service at Oscar Scherer State Park in Osprey, FL that coincidentally falls on National Public Lands Day - Sept. 29, 2007. (nationalpubliclandsday.org and floridastateparks.org/oscarscherer)

We are finalizing plans for the event this week with the Parks and Rec Dept. They are letting us take over their group camping area for Friday and Saturday nites, the 28th and 29th for any out-of-towners who would like to stay (tents only but there are rv sites elsewhere in the park).

So far, we have about 20 volunteers to work Saturday from about 8 am to 2:30/3 o'clock pm cleaning canopies over tent sites and picnic areas and raising canopies over roads and RV sites for clearance.

We are also coordinating volunteers for other projects throughout the park like pressure cleaning, painting, carpentry etc. The park manager is putting together a "wish-list" so we know what needs to be done.

Though the details are still not very detailed, we will have some kind of barbecue Saturday (I am working on sponsors for that. Maybe breakfast too??) and a campfire Saturday nite. The park has swimming, fishing, canoeing etc.

If any of you Florida people would like to join us, we would love to have you! PM either myself or my better half and we will get you on the list. If you or your company would like to sponsor something, let us know. We are open to ideas and suggestions. I will post more information as I get it.

We are really looking forward to this event and hope to have a huge turnout of volunteers. It will be a day of hard work but we will have a blast, too! We hope YOU join us!!

It IS a great park. We got the idea to do a volunteer day whilst tenting under a giant hanger.

We're not putting this together under the auspices of the FL chapter. Though we have an awesome chapter and they do some great things, this was something we wanted to do ourselves.

September 29th is approaching! The NPLD at Oscar Scherer Park is gearing up and looking to be a great day! Lots of work and lots of great people getting it done.

If you are interested in coming out for the day or for the weekend let me know so we can start to solidify our count and let the Parks guys know.

THANKS!!

[/ QUOTE ]The FAirchild Oak--a monster live oak near Ormond Beach--needs deadwood pruning. Just assessed it last week with the mgt. i hope to nominate it for national champ. that would be a good candidate. It's in Tomoka Park, which has fine campgrounds and kayaking and indian history museum etc.

MrMW drove the property with the park mgrs. Most of the removals are coming out to provide a fire break required by law. The others (5) are to be removed for construction of an equipment pole barn.

FLtreeman was called. Need to get BGPalmbeach, The Tallahasse boys, DL.Daland. The Tree Lady for sure with a couple guys.Could use anyone else that would like to join us for this great event. National Public Lands Day is a great day to help with our National/State Parks.

I have talked with BGTREEMAN and the tree lady they will both be there. Doug will do his best to make it. And I talked with the Tallahassee boys and they are sitting on the fence have Mrs. call them she can sweet talk anything from anyone.

Let me at'em. Those Tallahassee boys don't stand a chance! Besides we're going up there in November and dragging all our signs up there. I figure they owe us

. Just kidding. It's all good, if you're reading this T boys!!

Donny's talked to Doug and he's a definite...And who wouldn't be??? A day doing the work you love and 2 hanging with your friends...Can't beat it!!

Those laws mandating firebreaks--are they for vehicle access, or just to (hopefully) prevent the spread of fire? It's gotta be tough to cut down good trees for that, but if they burn you want to put it out.

Good on the Morningwoods for putting this together!

You know, I'm not really sure?? They both make sense, don't they? It's a real tinder box down here now.

MrMW says this one area is the only one that borders houses and condos. There is supposed to be a 20' firebreak. The largest tree in that area to be removed is 18" dbh. There are a couple "choice" trees in that area that they all feel are too nice to kill. They will limb them up to hopefully prevent fire from racing up into the canopies. All the other removals in the park are either dead or trees that are too close to the buildings (again, the 20' rule). Many of the dead trees coming down will be removed to 12-15' stumps for critters. And the debris will be left in the woods for critters, too.

And yah, it sucks taking good trees down, even though every tree has a specific, valid reason for removal. But I love the fact that Oscar Scherer is acres and acres (1400, actually) of undeveloped land that will stay that way. We are thrilled that we're able to help them maintain what they have charge over.

We've talked about food...we've covered the bounce house...How about a Karaoke DJ?? If any of you "on the fence-ers" would be swayed our way with karaoke, I'll certainly put it on the table!!

Good news from... the tree lady.. DL, TC, Big E, and others. Sounds like it will be a blast. Any equipment will be appreciated, and well used. We definatley have more work than we can do in one day, so the more people and machinery the better. I finalized the T-shirts.... simple and sweet. Still gathering donations!! Need more money if anyone can spare some! Any suggestions please call. Thanks for helping out. We believe the weekend will not easily be forgotten! Come out and join us! Lots of work for 6 hours... lots of great times for the rest of the weekend. Many thanks! Don and Terri Greene
