endless rope?

Does anyone know if a climbing rope or footlock rope can be spliced so that its endles looped? I mean smooth spliced so a prussik or hardware doesnt get stuck at it? if not does any has a suggestion what rope to use to get a smooth loop and thats still good and save to climb or footlock?

Dont ask me why, secret bussines trade :)

My guess is it can't be done without strength loss and/or an increase in diameter.

it depends what kind of rope. i don't understand what exactly you are using it for, but i have done this before...

Mark,

Tom and I setup a treadmill for some training we were doing... it was pretty cool (i was going to splice a loop to do this with, but i ran out of time).

Yep, treadmill it is....

I have a 9 meter wall at home were i want to make climbing treadmill for pracktice. I want ot use at the top a slow (variable) geared motor with "bolder". Just some wrappes around the bolder and climbing climbing.....

I sure need the practise, last week i had some nasty blisters on my hands...... To much office work :(

If any already made such setup i would like some pics...

Ill contact our gear supplier to hear whats possible. I can always use a fall arrest or seperate line to back up.

Next week i got holliday and will try to fix up the hardware.

I guess you are trying to do this alone?

If you have another person as belay you can try out what we have done at our shop, with ceilings of only 10-12 feet. We anchored a double pulley to the ceiling and ran a 200 foot line through the pulley or i guess you could do two separate ropes., never tried it, just a thought as i was typing.

If you can picture it the ends of the line are directly underneath the pulley on the ceiling, running through the pulley to a port a wrap anchored somewhere else. As you footlock, the belay lets out line, so you can take another bite with your feet. I swear its like twice the workout compared to regular footlocking.

I think it works real nice.

with a three strand rope it is possible using what they call a long splice. That means that you lose more rope doing it. It is fairly simple and quick to do though.

I got the idea of a treadmill from the book "On Rope"

If a treadmill is setup be sure to put a stopper knot at least as far from the end of the rope as the height of the overhead pulley. If the belayer lets the end of the rope slip through the friction device the climber is likely to fall. If there is too short a tail the climber will have a challenge to downclimb the rope.

I just bought a seemingly endless rope. 300' Velocity for climbing really big trees around here. For a good workout I go next door and climb a 130+ foot fir, tie in, rappel down and then speed climb to the top as fast as I can. After doing that a few times after a day at work I'm usually tired.

I think the Portawrap idea could work pretty well even possibly without another person if you had a fall arest system set up as a backup. That way you could footlock against the friction of the wraps until you ran out of rope and then just end up hanging on your backup.

Yes, it IS possible to create an endless loop. My best bet for maintaining even diameter would be to do an end to end splice in a polyester double braid like Double Esterln, Yale Yacht Braid, NER Sta-Set, or Samson Stable Braid....something like that.

Let me know specifics and I can help make it happen for you.
