Been here much more than a while
- Location
- My Island, WA
Back in ‘18 I volunteered to do some big leaf maple DNA collection on public lands. I basically had the NW quadrant of Washington state, and then the person who had SW hurt or broke their ankle so I wound up collecting west if I-5 for the entire state.
While on the east side of the Olympic peninsula one site we planned on gathering at had a massive fire break out, we got close as we could found a alternate site as we watched the helicopters drop water when the trees torched up like giant candles.
On our return we checked the maps and decided the coast was clear, but alas another fire broke out ahead of us, but right on the road. The only alternate route was to go up by the maple fire or turn around and drive for hours to get around. We sat it out behind the food truck for the Wildland crew for about 4 hours before they let traffic back through while mopping up.
I just got confirmation that some of our personal samples actually played a part in the case, and this is a huge deal due the the Lacey Act being invoked!
