Howdy folks. Our tiny tree biz bit the bullet and got a loan for a used truck and new dump trailer. If I search diesel forums there is all kinds of advice on maintenance schedule and which products to use. As I am a newbie diesel owner I thought I’d ask folks I can trust, my fellow tree guys and gals for answers to the following questions:
1. Truck is a used 2006 Ram 3500; 5.9l Cummins, 6 speed tranny 4WD dually. 230k on the odometer, pyro, boost, and fuel pressure aftermarket gauges and cold air intake.

2. Maintenance intervals: follow manufacturer’s recommendations or are there intervals you have found to be better?

3. products - I have a local amsoil dealer who can get me amsoil products for a good deal. Lots of searching indicated amsoil had good reviews. Your experiences?

this truck needs to last and I need to take care of it. Thanks for the help!
If you are in the market for a trailer the guys at Outlaw Trailer near Knoxville TN are outstanding! Very fair and easy to deal with.

Congrats on the new rig...Sounds like a great truck...The 5.9 cummins is one of the best motors ever....treat it right and it will go for many miles...

I highly recommend Schaeffers Oil products... I have run their motor oil, gear lube, grease ,and the tranny fluid in my trucks for yrs...No nonsense industrial shit made by one of the oldest oil companies in the country... They use true top tier bases and their add packs are second to none....The best of the best....

Go with fleetguard oil, fuel, and air filters.. Made just for your Cummins.

I would never run my motor oil too much over 5000 miles but thats just me...I myself pop in a new air filter every time I change my oil but I am on dirt roads for much of my driving..I change front and read differential fluid at 25,000. There are not that many grease fitting on your truck so hit them when you think about it....Auto or manual tranny?

Thanks Rico! Exactly what I was looking for. 6 speed manual tranny.

Take the Dodge and pressure wash the underside, dry it and coat it with oil/Fluid Film.
Ball joint, u joints, and Cardon joints will all need to be serviced regularly.

Get quality batteries and change them earlier than with a gasser. Aftermarket coolant filters (~$150) are recomended by many mechanics and regular coolant service.

The fuel delivery system is the ballgame on a diesel so keep those filters clean, and go out of your way to make sure your getting good diesel... With the ultra low sulfur diesel we have to deal with these days I am a big believer in a diesel fuel additive. I like Shaeffers SoyShield, Optilube XPD, Stanadyne, or Hot Shots Secret..Anyone of these will serve you well...Your injectors will thank you, and your Cummins will run like butter....
