Dealing with a major entitled neighbor on the worksite

Well we had a difficult neighbor on the job site and he demanded we remove his tree for free and he would also not allow us to step one foot on his property. I'm curious to know if you guys thought we did the right thing. Also I would add that we help people out all of the time and if this guy would have been cool we would have most likely helped him.

Perhaps referring to this individual by a less derogatory term would be a good idea. I know several fine ladies named Karen, all of whom would rightly be offended by the misuse of their name.

I would hope no one gets their feelings hurt over the “term” Karen” or “Nancy”

I used the word Hillbilly a week or so ago and again if I offended anyone I apologize
I didn’t mean any disrespect My mother’s side is all from Corbin Kentucky

When I was about 7 I heard an adult make a comment about Peeping Tom...not referencing me though...that got some snickers.I didn't get the joke so I asked my Dad what was funny. He explained what it meant in terms my 7 year old mind could understand. I knew that the joke wasn't about me, or any of my Tom-buddies. I've had to deal with it for...well, you do the math...a few years LOL

There certainly are much more nasty name tags besides Karen and Tom.

Karen is a misplaced insult in this case. Taken from ‘the internet’ - “Karen is a pejorative slang term for an obnoxious, angry, entitled, and often racist middle-aged white woman who uses her privilege to get her way or police other people’s behaviors.”

The male equivalent of a ‘Karen’ is a ‘Ken’. I’m assuming there was not racist undertones driving this conflict.

So many great terms of insult. I think ‘dick’ and ‘prick’ work hand in hand here and are sort of a broad spectrum insult that works for a lot of cases.

‘Schmuck’ is a little juicier but also carries with it the implication the person is a little pathetic as well as selfish or kind or mean.

‘Princess’ would be a more creative term and brings home the qualities of entitlement and unrealistic expectations, with a hint of emasculation which is always a hit.

‘Chachke’ is a personal favorite and might be something I kind of made up, this applies to a male who has spent too much money on dumb shit and thinks the world revolves around them. There’s a little bit less of the selfishness though and a bit more daftness.

Just trying to turn rain day 4 in a row into something productive…

(I’m focusing on insults for those who present as male.)

What if they called all sex offenders "Tom Dunlaps"?

Not a fan of demonizing names. It's a Dick move. :sisi:

Thanks Tom for your subtle defense. :) Sorry to distract from the subject matter with a derogatory name. The post was meant to add value as it is a common situation to run into a disgruntled neighbor. The entitlement mentality here just seemed to fit. I've spoken with my editor and we'll avoid distractions in the future. Dealing with property line trees is always a little tricky. I had a connection with this client that caused me to be a bit sheepdogish in my approach. Hopefully, some value can be drawn from the video for someone.

Hey Tom, Good to connect with you again, I posted my apology above. I didn't personally post that description, but I should have monitored a bit more closely. I hope all is well with you in retirement. Are you living back in Minnesota now? I pass through every once in a while on the way to North Dakota. We climbed a big White pine in The Lost 40 up north that was fun. You can see a video of it on our channel. Will you be at TCIA Expo this year? We will arrive on Wednesday night.

It seems like he Complainor/Tree Owner/Chiseler should have done the right thing and had the rest of the tree removed not take the stance that someone else was going to be 'responsible' for them not doing proper routine maintenance.

I bet if we tuned into the TreeBuzz equal in the tireshop industry and we'd here this same story about getting three new tires just because one got replaced from being worn out and being destryed.

My Dad and a particular inflection in his voice when he punctuated stories like this with the expletive, "Damn Chiselers!!!"

I certainly got a chuckle from your post. Point very well taken:) I typically avoid insults and my lack of practice is definitely made apparent by your expert advise:) Thanks for your creativity.

So a few questions/statements I have.

I only watched the very first part of the video, but listened to the full audio of it (I was working). I agree they were most likely stump sprouts, any therefore separate entities...sort of. If they were stump sprouts, they would still share some of the same root structure of the original stump. So wouldn't cutting one somewhat impact the stability of the other? I agree it would not effect the health of the other side but in killing that side (side being cut) and therefore killing the roots on that side, does it not increase the potential of uprooting? Also by removing the one side you are now opening the other side to wind, from its weak side...also increasing the failure.

The other point of contention I have is the following. I believe you talked about, on the video, that if you were just trimming the tree you can't effect the health of the tree or do something that causes its death. But you are literally removing the tree (which is fully on neighbor's property) to the property line. So you are technically killing that entity/side of the tree.

I fully agree the neighbor should remove the tree, and pay for both sides to be done. With documentation your customer, or their insurance, shouldn't be responsible for any damages if it failed.

Your etymological analogy breaks down and isn't relative to the use of Karen/Ken since there is no surname used.

There is a whole group of words in common usage that started life as a person's name.

The word boycott derives from Captain Charles Boycott,

Your special pleading is not very convincing. But the fact that the last name isn't used makes it worse. Not many babies named Karen in the last few years.

My take on this is that in an age where memes spread so quickly, it is bad form to demonize a name. It's a mean-spirited thing to do IMO, demonstrating a lack of empathy and respect for others. However, long term it probably won't matter, as it won't take long for many (most)? names to earn their place in derogatory vocabulary.

Personally it's a fad that I don't participate in.

Skimmed through some... did you say you knew you were trespassing, after he politely told you not to, but you are already working, so Tough S@#$?

With the trunks all being from one root system, doesn't that mean it's one entity with multiple trunks?

So I have officially taken over the posting on tree buzz from my social media editor:) He was posting on behalf of the company, but I will personally take that responsibility to stay within the purpose and mission of this forum. Thanks for all the feedback guys,
