Do you carry Hook insurance? I currently dont because I dont have anything of great value on the hook. Often thought about it though for the occasional non tree lift.

Aren't you on the hook most of the time?

So, how many different liabilities are there associated with owning a crane?

I hear different stories with insuring a crane:

Some say, you need vehicle insurance, rigging insurance, general liability, and now I see hook insurance.

I'm sure I'm confusing things somewhere. What's the deal with insuring a crane?

Vehicle insurance for the truck. Inland marine for the crane(not covered under collision) hook insurance if you are constantly lifting something of value(insures the load),general liability (insures what could potentially be damaged from the crane or load),but not a seperate policy from what you might have. just let them know you operate a crane.

Insuring the rig is one thing, but i were wondering more about how much damage you can do when things go wrong.

Crane removals aren't very common in Australia. They are done, but no where near what seems to be the frequency over there. I don't think there is a single tree company in australia that owns there own crane.

I carry NO hook insurance, I guess I was thinking I was covered under my existing policy for anything I was picking.

The most expensive single item I can recall I've picked was a huge (24" plus port)stainless valve with a very complicated actuating system to open and close it. Food grade stainless at that. 13 k and a couple hundred grand I was told.

That looked like a bigger crane at least 50 ton, most likely a whole lot more. Our crane guy wouldn't set up close to that bank with his 37 ton.
And to the video with the crane tipping on the log. WTF, I never cut anything, even though I know its good, without checking with the operator on how much he's good for and which way he's pulling. If there is ever a question an extra pick or two is, obviously, worth it.
