Climb with as many different climbers as you can, go to climber gatherings like days of service and TCCs. I've learned something new every single time I've watched a another climber.

Get a Z133.1 Read it, know it, live it.

Build your library, read a lot and listen carefully to your tutors. If you have a cell phone with you in the tree, don't be afraid to lanyard in and use it to ask questions.

It takes a while to think in three dimensions. Seeing the tree from the ground and planning your movements and then executing them in the canopy becomes easier with experience.

I believe I first saw this or something similar here on the Buzz: "Habits are difficult to form. Choose them wisely."

True words. You have to climb different species of trees, move you're TIP around in them, learn to get your lifeline around methodically without dragging or fouling it. The more you climb the more you learn to plan your moves but everything goes faster because planning becomes second nature and you do it constantly.

I don't know if you're a rock climber but it took me a long time to learn to grab the rope and use it as a handhold because I was so conditioned against it. Holding the rope is probably the single most useful technique I've learned for tree work.

When I started I deadwooded a bunch of trees in my yard just to get more work climbing experience.
