Climbing Groups or Climbers in Portland, Oregon?

Hi Buzzers,

Another newb here. Like many, I have been reading up and watching videos on climbing. I am working towards ordering some gear in the near future. I'm very keen to climb and have zero experience with climbing gear or using it in trees. Currently my interest is recreational climbing. I would love to meet, talk to, watch, and learn from experienced climbers. Are there any groups, get togethers, or climbers around Portland Oregon wiling to suffer an eager-to-learn new climber?
Thanks!

Thanks, JontreeHI and Tuebor. I will definitely check that event out! I was aware of treeclimbingplanet, choosing to get some gear (and take it slow) with my funds first and a class or two later. I can't afford both atm.

A good person to talk to is Joe at pci waste (bandit) on johnson creek blvd. in milwaukee. He can help with contacts as well as equipment. Another good person to know is Damien Carre' from oregon tree care. he also operates a company called expedition old growth (expeditionoldgrowth.com). He can help with your understanding of climbing safely without harming the trees. The most important details for you to know are simple. 1 climbing trees is dangerous (duh). 2 spurs are for pro's not rec. Climbers (they damge trees and should only be used when removing a tree). 3 learn your knots. (bowline, bowline on a bight, anchor hitch, alpine butterfly, blakes hitch). 4 DO NOT CLIMB ON OLD ROPE OR ROPE THAT WAS NOT DESIGNED FOR CLIMBING.
Most of this stuff is common sense that you probably already know.

Damien is a good guy.

I second that! There are several very skilled climbers in Portland, including but not limited to Damien Carre, Brian French, and Will Koomjian. They do a lot of big tree stuff when they are not climbing to make a living.
