Climbing Ensemble Cost

I know we've got beginning climbers to seasoned experts here on the Buzz. I was wondering how much worth of gear and clothing folks are wearing on their bodies for climbing: boots, pants, jacket, shirt, gloves, helmet, saddle + accessories, hand saw, climbing system and climbers (even though you may not be using both simultaneously), lanyards, and the regular stuff that's normally on your saddle.

My total is around $2600 based on list prices (and doesn't include a chainsaw, although I normally climb with a saw hanging on my saddle.) I'm guessing my ensemble is cheaper than average, but I don't really know. Seems easy to go over $4k with top quality stuff.

Usually Ergovation saddle and Akimbo, and either Bashlin aluminum spurs with caddies, or a CT footie and SAKA Minimax. Silky Tsurugi. Zillon or Cinch lanyard adjuster, nice climbing line. I look for sale prices. Definitely didn’t pay Buckingham’s list price for the Ergovation!

A person could have a good MRS rec setup for around 1000$ probably. TM SuperLight, 150’ of HyperClimb, 2 hitch cords, 2 micro pulleys, 4 or 5 biners, and a foot ascender. Chop a bit off the climb line and make a lanyard. Maybe 1000$ give or take.

Spitballing here, but I’m around 3200…. Carbon fiber spikes, saw pants/protective boots included. Granted not all of that was purchased in one shot, and some is creature comfort stuff(suspenders, carbon fiber spikes etc). Meh, quality tools aren’t cheap, and every tradesperson needs tools. Worth every penny.

I've got a similar setup. The climbing systems (ropes and ascending gear) add a bunch more.

I'm also a rope addict!

I would estimate my setup at around $2000, on the rare occasion I go up. I am a rather minimalist working climber, but everything I usually use is top end ultralight and therefore expensive.

Does that include climbers (spurs)? I was guessing that including both climbers and rope climbing systems would make for higher totals.

I have pretty cheap climbers and don't wear pricy clothing, but carry a fair amount of gear: foot, knee and hand ascenders, chest harness with roller, RRP, 2 lanyards (1 with ART, 1 with Microscender), figure 8, at least 7 carabiners, a couple of slings and a hand saw. Add in a S. Light with a Vault and Caritool, helmet, gloves and boots and I'm decked for climbing.

Dang! That’s a good bit of rope @Dan Cobb. My 3200 spitball, did not include all my doodads…. More or less gaff up a tree on a hitchclimber with a handsaw….

That does include my spurs, which are currently Gecko Carbon Fibers. My rope system isn’t as expensive though, I climb with either a ZigZag or a RopeWrench and a hitch.

Hmm, I've heard around 5K from many climbers over the years... I think the question is misleading because on any *one* climb, probably 1000-2500 worth of gear, but if someone stole the work van, fully stocked....many, many thousands.
It's a great question though and one your insurance provider needs to have if any stolen gear is going to be replaced. I believe the policy is an inland marine, in order to cover bits of stuff inside the truck (s)...in case this conversation gets people nervous about the gold they carry around!

Ui

All good points. 6 years ago thieves worked through my neighborhood taking anything out of unlocked vehicles. My truck was unlocked and they got most of my gear. From what I could list the replacement cost came to $3800. My home owners ponied up but it was still a PITA. That was with cheaper gear too. I have a set of gear at me daughters that is 1000 miles away. Last year I inventoried what I have there and it came in at $8K.

Agreed.. I can climb with just about 4-500 worth of gear. But, at any given time it’s about a few grand
The only tree I climber today was a spout, 8” at the base, and 2.5 at the single story gutter. Just had to cut it in half.
Handsaw $120
Long laynard ~$175-225
New tribe onyx fully outfitted with RE enforcers $700
Petzl basic dmm swivel and petzl pulley carabiner ~250$?
A sling and screw links $30
Ct thingy for a bridge adjuster 70
Basins with Velcro wraps $600?
Boots 350
Saw pants 300
Helmet with eye and ear pro 200
Echo 2511 with Stihl bar 500 +\-

That is pretty basic, and I’m a minimalist climber but have many options to grab outta the truck.

All that cause it was easier to step up the tree than pull a ladder and pole tools off the truck

@evo I doubt you run one “enforcer” let alone plural “enforcers” do you? That would be a very expensive set up there! Is that to monitor your weight throughout the day? That may be what I need to keep my weight in check….
