Cinching Bowline on a Bight?

Hello All,

When learning to tie a bowline on a bight, I found I had a 50% chance of getting it right. But then I realized that either way might be right, and that the alternative method (one that creates a cinching "bowline on a bight") might also have a number of uses.

I've attached a slideshow showing the difference and I am eager to hear what you all think of it--and if you have ever used it for any purpose.

A midline cinching knot has merit.

Not sure if it's still a bowline but I don't know the typology of the knot. Maybe still in the overhand/thumb knot group? Cinching overhand on a bight?

I’ll second what Teubor says, it does not look like a bowline to me, especially considering that one of the characteristics of a bowline is that it does not slip. Probably you could use that knot in a basic MRS setup in place of the two half hitches when tying a Blake’s or Tautline, but why would you? This knot looks to me like it will cinch tight but then become very difficult if not impossible to untie when heavily loaded.

A double-fisherman's/poacher's knot can be tied with a bight, and cinches too, btw/FYI/etc.
