Chip truck bed

I just picked up a dodge 3500 with cummins dieseland am going to put a chip box on it. Whatever design I go with it will be alluminum to keep weight down and I can easily do a dump but would rather do some kind of walking bed/conveyor system to get them off. Anybody done this yet or seen it done??

Thanks Paul

I use a Loadhandler as well. The difficulty that I've found is that the wheel wells keep it from unloading well. I haven't gotten around to boxing around the cab-end of the bed to avoid this bottleneck.

Because the Loadhandler/ tailgate (Loadhandlers work the tailgate hard.) can only handle so much, what I've found to work well to avoid pitchfork unloading is to layer tarps in with the chips. Two guys can pull off each layer of tarp/chips with relative speed and ease. Sometimes rolling the tarp from the cab-end toward the tailgate works well if the drag is too difficult. A chip slope downward toward the tailgate will help as well (which naturally happens somewhat, and can be quickly shaped as the tarps are layered.

Nothing compared to a dump bed, but as a stepping stone, I think its good.

When i worked for a landscaping company we would get shipments of mulch in. They would come on a large tractor trailer with a walking bed. Emptied out perfectly, its a great idea for chips. If anyone knows of a setup like this for arborist put up some pictures. I would be very interesed in this as well.

Anyone have a good idea for a top to go on an easydumper insert. Got one today and need to figure out a good top for it. Gonna just put a wood box on it for now but could use some ideas as I will put a better top on when the weather is better.

lawsonstree- I thought long and hard for a while about one of those dump beds from Northerntool. It seemed senseless to me to buy an insert when you could just turn the bed into a dumper itself. I totally stopped thinking about it when someone explained to me that theres inserts now for a reason. Apparently the beds on the newer pickups are a lot less meaty than the old. I've heard stories of beds just collapsing as soon as they raise off the frame with a load on them. It wouldnt be a problem if you have an after market bed or some type of flat bed. Would be interesting to test the abilities of one sometime though...

Yup

a buddy of mine had a northern tool dump under his half ton pickup ive seen itloaded with wood and chips to the max. he built his on aluminum body its about 5 ft tall he just added some helper springs the inserts are real nice too . maybe alocal junk yard has a cheap flat bed with all the pump cylinders etc good luck with whatever way you decide to go .. cant go wrong with a dump of any kind..

yes and about 6-7ish yards. The lower half is a truckcraft insert which holds 2 for sure.

Here's the big sister.
