Chainsaw Modifications Vs Stihl Dealer Service ?

Just a couple thoughts for discussion .................

I see a fair amount of TB discussion regarding saw modifications.
Many of these are very intriguing ! ! !

I do not do "major" engine / mechanical repairs on my equipment.
(I am a Stihl fan: saws, blowers, whackers, vacuums, etc.)

1. Would a Stihl dealer service a modified saw ?
Would they follow the modification "spec's"; whatever those are. (timing, compression, RPM, hardware changes, etc)

I assume you don't want to ship it back to the "original modifier".

I have 3 good Stihl dealers in my area.
I have occasionally had to have service done a couple times to fix problems on stock equipment.

2. I assume that Stihl designs saws for a "cost / benefit" of performance, reliability, longevity, etc.
I also assume that high performance modifications MAY reduce the longevity.
Are the increases in performance worth the increase in productivity ?

When the 150's first came out, I tried one at a TCC.
I made a fabulous looking cut; but I thought it was significantly under powered for what I wanted.
So I didn't buy it. I also haven't bought a mod-150.

Just looking for comments. Not saying Yah or Nay.
Let the stones fly !

I would think that a lot would depend on your dealer. I haven't had to use mine yet for anything other than buying but my assumption is that they are like everyone else. I have one dealer that would probably not, however I have one that will actually do mods on the side if asked. Of course they are not endorsed and void your warranty but we all know that.

Not a stihl product, but my dad owns a Vw jetta diesel 2002(i think), when he bought it would do 1300 Km to a tank. He sent it to a Vw expert to have a new timing belt put on. The mechanic called him to say the timing was off 180 degrees, he wouldn't work on it until it was back to factory specs.

Long story short when he got it back it does 850 km/tank of diesel on its best day.

We won't modify a saw but will do our best to work on them (if modified) to your specs. (Full line husky/Stihl dealer)

Modifications on your end greatly reduce our ability to guarantee the quality of our work.

Like everything we try to do what is best for you the customer without shooting ourselves in the feet.

If you were to come in very CONCERNED about whose responsibility any mishaps might lay on for potential work that we might do to the best of our ability in good faith, we might pass.

Had a 200T in to local Stihl dealer (good people) for carb issue last year.
Got a lecture on how they would also be installing and charging me for the missing muffler screen.
When I got it home, the new screen got put in a safe spot, to be retrieved if said saw ever has to go back in for future service work. ;)

apart from the voided warranty you may also void the technicians skill set. Unless the dealer is familiar with mods it would be a good idea to drop one off there. Many "features" end up modified that were intended to be there, like the carb limiters. Not a good bet unless you know the tech.

Ported or unported...... Most dealer issues are the same.

Tune? Same
Recoil,plastic,oiling,air leaks........all the same.

Take off the muffler..... Scoring?? Clean or replace. Almost the same. Check the squish.

I've never had trouble with a ported saw at a GOOd Stihl dealer.
Meaning knowledgeable. Not just R&R.

But all issues have been non ported type.

With 6 ported saws from 026 to 090 from 3 builders I have not had a ported problem. The 026 and 044/046 I use a lot.
