Can you say sequestration?

That's my song, too. I have it on repeat. :)
I was traveling by plane a few days ago and began that very discussion with a guy sitting behind me. By the end of the flight, four people were involved in the discussion, and stoked about the possibilities of reforestation. I think what we really need is to focus on native plants, and establish more QUICKLY! It would also help a great deal to have a solid consensus of future climate conditions we can expect when new forest trees or individual trees reach maturity.
I used to clear land, and came to a point at which I couldn't live with my actions. That ledge to start my own business, and I have been promoting trees for years now. I feel much better in my heart.
I've also begun a permaculture garden installation where I live. I hope to offer garden installations as a service as I learn more about it by 'doing'.

As a biology bible thumper... Ya think???

First order of business - GET EVERYBODY ON BOARD!!!

Sooner or later we will be the most important industry in the world.

Such simple things as just rebuilding a saw (instead of disposing of and replacing with a new one) or throwing a bottle to a place to get recycled...

Another big ole touchy argument (I would argue it is the core of the problem)- why do we destroy the forests? Homes, food?? Why do we need more area for this??? How many children do you have???? Just sayin. We are pretty slick for a species and, for sure, smart folks - but can we bypass our biological imperative? We have definitely been taking aim at our feet with a pistol.

If we were not here anymore, I have faith that it would ALL grow back and stabilize just fine without us! :)

In traffic, burning the heck out of some diesel. I look down, there, in between the concrete joints - grass. The poplar comment made me remember that. I have seen trees growing right on the concrete - totally crazy. Give em a bit of sun and a mm to grow and there off to the races. But I kill my house plants :|.

Can't kill it - and I think that is so amazing.

Makes you wonder how a tree company that damages a tree kills em so frequently.

Since change comes from within, perhaps some good legislation could help make some headway until "everybody gets on board". Perhaps social networking could help...

Comparison of Atmospheric Temperature with CO2
Over The Last 400,000 Years

http://www.geocraft.com/WVFossils/last_400k_yrs.html

"Do rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations cause increasing global temperatures, or could it be the other way around? This is one of the questions being debated today. Interestingly, CO2 lags an average of about 800 years behind the temperature changes-- confirming that CO2 is not the cause of the temperature increases. One thing is certain-- earth's climate has been warming and cooling on it's own for at least the last 400,000 years, as the data below show. At year 18,000 and counting in our current interglacial vacation from the Ice Age, we may be due-- some say overdue-- for return to another icehouse climate!"

Who knows I didn't do the science. It just seems obvious to me that having a place for wildlife and plant diversity is important. If it's spotted owl, woodland caribou, grizzly bears, or CO2 that slows development I'll take it. We are chewing this planet up and going to be spitting it out soon.

Or the planet is going to be spitting us out soon.

There is an interesting circle called photosynthesis/respiration. Coincidentally, the reactions are reverse.

Our planet is set up dancing a line of factors. Change the factors, change the dance. If anyone wishes to dispute the idea that we have made significant changes in the planet's balance - ok, I suppose. Our significance is none. We are one of millions of species.

I find it interesting, if you wish to use C02 as the trigger, that no government body has said plant trees until now. It is always - conserve, find better sources of energy, recycle... If one looks at the CO2 curve on an annual basis, there is a crazy drop every spring when the leaves come out. Make the connection.

The system must remain stable or bad things are going to happen.

Species diversity is a great discussion. Fundamental for maintaining a balance. I really do not wish to have no options - more like my kids having no options.

I dont think everyone needs to or should be "on Board"

Much like an undiverse forest progress stops and disease sets in fast.

you guys are scarying me.....just what we need more legislation.....we should all be good stewards of the rescources we have been granted.....but if you think the Government is the answer my opinion is,thats the wrong approach....just saying.

"Voting with our wallets" can make a big difference, but resource depletion is coming from unconscious consumerism, and people that will never read this thread, much less care to. Individual change (to limit or reverse one's environmental footprint) comes from within. How can we protect people from themselves until they decide to 'change'? I feel that legislation can help. We have speed limits, legal drinking ages, even the Z-133...some of it can be helpful.

Far better than clear cutting!

One of the properties of tree communities that I have noticed in my career is that there is some degradation with any change. It would be awesome to monitor those slight changes that they make with this lower impact solution. We need so much more research in this area.

It's too late for more research. 80% of the planets forests have been destroyed or fragmented. Everything has been polluted in the last hundred years. The oceans, air, arctic, ground water, everything. Hate to say it but we're already past the point of no return. Time to stop kidding around and bowing down to the false god known as the economy.

Can you tell I watched the David Suzuki movie last night?

Watch the one on what happens when people disappear... Discovery channel I think. Makes my heart warm :).

Need water, food and a place to keep me warm. I would have a tough time without society - don't watch enough survivorman.
