Cabling.... what do you use?

@Neill just had a post on replacing a cable. He used another cable.

I recall sometime ago, Cobra was all the rage. Was supposed to be better fur the tree with no penetrations and allows growth with movement.

A now retired local guy used chain link. Setup just like the Cobra stuff.

What's your method? Anything else out there?

Rigguys for me. But it really depends on the tree if they need static support or dynamic/passive support. Nearly all the trees I see need static support with thru bracing. I did however have a tree break a 3/8”EHS cable recently in a bad storm, tree was destroyed along with several along the lake.

Using dynamic cabling for me was a mistake. When I was first introduced to dynamic cabling, I thought I was using a more advanced and less invasive system. But they will girdle. It’s nice to use on small ornamentals that can easily be adjusted and monitored (sweetbay magnolia etc), but they can start girdling within a few years on fast growing large trees.

I've noticed in the chain link "system," the guy left a larger loop around the stems and a wee bit of slack between the 2.
I've yet to find one of his that have girdled or the tree has grown around the chain loops. I'm sure I will someday though. He was in business for 40 some years.

I use All Gear synthetic 1/2 inch on a lot of lighter stuff and would like to see a Rigguy type hard plastic fitting for it and the 3/4 inch stuff. I believe it would be a winner. No need to split out strands, jusyslip part into the hollow middle of the material. Only issue I see is reduced tensile strength at the fitting. Remember, you heard it here first.
