I've been wearing KASK 100% time for couple years and now I want to add SENA system so I don't have to yell at my groundy and hurt my voice. I'm looking at Treestuff website. Not sure if I want to have the 3M ear muff. I think that I probably don't want to wear ear muff while im in the tree just for total awareness of my surroundings not to mention it will make my sweat more probably. What do u guys think? hearing protection is not my concern in the tree compared to by the chipper.

This might be a dumb question. looks like that if i want the helmet with SENA installed it will come with the ear muff. I assume that the ear muff is easily detachable right?

There are others that don't require muffs that Sherrill/Treestuff don't seem to market:

For example:

I've also seen some other brands of earbuds with bluetooth, but none that convinced me they are adequate.

Then there is this thread: https://www.treebuzz.com/forum/threads/helmet-comms.41843/page-2#post-630562 where @Naturarbo talked about using 2 way radios with ear pieces...

I haven't done anything yet, but will likely either go that route or the Sena Expand as I don't want to wear earmuffs all the time either. I usually wear banded ear plugs in the tree.

bummer! I thought they already have everything figured out and i just pull the trigger and my groundie and i can start talking tomorrow. well, more reading and research then. Thx. guys

"They" do have it figured out pretty well if you want it in the ear muffs - or so I've heard. There are problems here and there, but overall sounds like a great system for what it is. without ear muffs...yeah, there is still work to do.

If you prefer to choose your earmuffs, and not be stuck with only the one option from Sherrill, go to Gap Arborist Supply, they can send you a SENA setup with whatever earmuffs you prefer.

The muffs are a very effective noise isolation which allows for much better audio on the sena, I don’t know how it would work otherwise. You can still hear each other talk about what you had for dinner last night while bucking up a log with a 461. How cool is that! If you want to keep your situational awareness up while climbing, you can leave one muff off. I put both muffs on even when I’m using a husqvarna battery powered saw so I’m very into ear pro. Once the damage is done to your ears, that’s the end of that for life. I prefer the 3m muffs on a kask to the pfanner built in muffs, but most people would probably disagree.

I've kept my situational awareness using ear muffs for years. What it is you think you're going to miss? As so far as the sweat pooling in the muffs, never had an issue. Virginia has double digit temps and humidity all summer. You should just commit to keeping your hearing intact and wear the muffs until you get used to them. If you think you're gonna keep the muffs off and then put them on before every cut, then take them off, then put them on, then take them off.....thats a lot of lost time. It's not like you can't hear the chipper, saws, engine noise. It's just reduced.

You can use them without pushing them against your ear by just leaving them in the popped out position. It gives you some airflow vs pushed up against your head. I do this myself when I'm in my bucket truck and using my electric saw. I'm in Alabama. It gets really hot and humid here in the summer.

I love ear muffs. I leave them on 100% except if my groundie gets out of sight. I have tinitus. Try not to get it. Some will not be able to handle it. Mine was from shallow water freediving with sinus probs. Anyway hearing impairments cannot be reversed. I am saying this as a huge warning. Muffs or plugs are essential while running saws or using chippers. Just be aware. Awful when your little ones are talking to you and you are saying what constantly.

We've used em for several years, guys have grown accustom to them and even when it's really hot they still use em. I think chippers are worse than saws. Protect your eyes, ears and fingers you'll need em when you get older I assure you.....I'm old

You don't look old from the backside...

Perfect example of where I'd like coms without earmuffs today:. Was doing a prune that was almost all handsaw work and a handful of cuts with Battey powered Makita. Turned into a cable/bracing job as well.

4 neighbors mowed while we were working...one without a muffler on his riding mower. Then there was a periodic train 2 blocks away. Commutation was NOT easy.

No need for earmuffs. I really don't like them, but wear plugs or muffs when around loud noises. I just don't do big removals and a lot of handsaw only pruning, so it would be great to have a system in my helmet without muffs. Bonus if it could transfer to my helmet with muffs for when I wear that.
