Nasty rotten things. As with all physical damage, once the damage is done there is no going back.
Sheering may help.
2% superior oil or 2% insecticidal soap as the new growth is emerging and activity occurs. Soak into the axials etc. to get any unhatched eggs (with oil).
I have been doing systemics with Imidacloprid in the spring as per label (Criterion 75 WSP) but results are discouraging. Seems like it should work just by sheer population reduction since obviously it will not turn back time and reverse the cupping...tough little buggers like you said.
I mean...if they pierce and suck sap...it has poison in it...KABAAAAM (theoretically lol).
Imid is not a highly soluble, nor transportable, substance. As such the time from application to uptake, translocation, and activity is not immediate and can be weeks or months. You may be applying far too late in the spring.
Imid is used extensively for eab soil drenches. It moves ok and in Imicide injections it is said that it has been altered to move better. Months...I don't think so. Maybe too late to avoid cupping but still useful in reduction me thinks. Gonna have a word with the experts by phone soon.
