felling job from last week, tree came down due to Kretzchmaria deusta and Armillaria base rot, saw was a 660 with 36" bar, Yale double esterlon 3/4" rope attached halfway up tree, attached to 5 ton cable handwinch which had a little pre-tension on it prior to making the felling cuts. Spec was to fell, de-limb, stack branches, cut timber into logs, no tidy up, great winter job.

Why did you cut the paver size logs? I once milled a similar size beech into lumber that a neighbor had me cut down. It had such a beautiful grain and color. I strip stacked it to dry. but it twisted anyway and turned so rock hard I could not drive a nail through it. I ended up using it for siding on a metal frame garage and drilled holes for each screw to fasten it to the frame.

Nice job. What a beautiful tree and setting. I like your description of the job and gear. Why did you opt to fell the tree instead of climb it?

client wanted timber for firewood. It would've been great to mill it I agree. Tree was planted in 1870.

It was felled because we could fell it straight across the section of lawn into the field next door. Plus the client was going to deal with the brash piles so no chipping or tidy up, which is a rare thing. All we had to do was get it down, cut into logs they could split and stack branches in piles near the tree. Would be nice if all jobs were like this but it's a one off.
