BC1800 Grease Specs

It appears that Vermeer is pretty tight-fisted with their manuals...can't find digital copies anywhere, and information seems hard to come by.

Does anyone know offhand what the recommended grease amounts and frequencies are for the BC1800? We had a guy in for a short while that was obsessed with greasing the chipper from past experiences with other machines, and he cost us a new clutch from over-greasing. We're trying to write up formal shop standards, but can't find the information we're looking for.

Any help is appreciated; thanks!

Which clutch is it? Those can be researched easily and folks called. I’ve read that over-greasing the clutch is the most common cause of failure, that one should be written down or only one person do it.

I can’t help you on the specifics. But it depends on the part.
The way I was taught is all bearings or bushings. X1 pump daily, OR if unsealed pump just enough to see the grease move.
Also for these main spinning bearings as long as there is SAFE access, grease them when they are moving! Something like slow idle with the clutch engaged.
Now for non bearings or bushings. I grease these as little as possible! Things like the clutch lever, I do it by feel, starts to get a little sticky, give it a pump, outfeed shoot rotation same, hinges that open frequently as needed, hinges that do not open frequently a little more often so they don’t rust.
Now for the clutch. It’s obviously going to depend on the manufacture. On my twin disk, it calls for every 10 hours on non bearing parts, and every 100 on the main bearings . The 10 hr zirts are things like the lever arm and I hit these when sticky only, the 100 hour one is the super critical one (the throwout) where the spinning shaft rides. But contact is only made when engaging and disengaging. Remember that when the grease moves out of the bearing or lever shafts on the exterior there is a strong chance it’s also being pushed out inwards too. On a clutch there is nowhere for this grease to go, and it piles up inside the clutch.
In my opinion it is probably a good idea to take the clutch off and clean it out every 500-750 hours or so.

Greasing is like oil changes, and will vary on how it’s used and location. Lots of off roading in dusty conditions it’s a good practice to change the oil more frequently than manufacturer recommendations. Heavy highway use you can get by with less, city driving… on and on.. road salt? Parking it in the weather or shop?

I have my crew grease the main disk/drum bearings, and feed wheels (simple machine) daily. I handle all the rest.
