What length do you prefer on your climbing chainsaw?

Just curious. I started with a 16" but I'm trying a 12" now for pruning to see if I can move around the tree a little better.

I don't see how 4" of bar would help you to move around the tree any easier. And a 12" bar is WAY too short.

i use a 12" bar. i agree i dont think it particulary helps you to move around the tree any quicker....i personally feel safer running a 12" bar. i normally go straight from the 12" bar up to the 460 with 25" bar.
maybe if i had a ported 200 i might consider a 16" bar

I don't know that it will, haven't used it yet. I know my 16" snags my rope a lot and I'm hoping that will happen less. For takedowns I think the 16" is fine, handy even... but working around a white oak crown I'm constantly paying attention to keeping my rope off the bar... could be a 12" won't be any different. It's worth $40 to me to find out.

Always used a 14" bar, I can see the logic in Steve's choice but any bigger than 14" is just being silly.

Yeah, but this is AMERICA. Where if a little bit of steel (or Stihl) is good, then more is better!

I like the 12", nice compact and better chain speed in the cut. The 14" and 16" especially seems to drag and slow chain speed when buried in wood

I used to run the lite bar on my MS200T. I really liked it too. Well it came time to replace it and I went back to the normal bar. I can truely feel the weight difference!

I can feel the bar tip the weight of the saw downward. I'll go back to the lite bar next time.

For the sake of the topic. I use 14" length.

Sweet sixteen. I do have a little Echo 3000 pruning saw that wears a 14 but for the past 15 years every other climbing saw got fitted with a 16. It is surprising how frequently that extra 2 inches of bar saves having to reposition.

I think you will defenitly be able to tell the differnce on how you move in tight spots and how the saw feels on your saddle with 4" decrease but there will be those times when you wish you had the longer bars. I'd go with 14". If you're gonna run a 12 getcha a 192T for pruning.

using a 16 right now but i have used a 14 and i like it more than the 16, rips right through the cuts ya need it too, definatly utilizes the power of an 020 better than a 16, all i need now is my boss to buy me one so i dont have to use my own personal saws on his job site
