Arbor Day

My calendar says April 22nd. I'm interested to hear what kind of fun projects we all can come up with. I'm thinking about taking the day off work to do a climbing demo and tree planting at my daughters school, unless my boss reads this post first. /forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Ask him to sponsor the demo, tell him about all the potential clients that will be there. /forum/images/graemlins/applaudit.gif

I do a tree planting with third graders that participate in a junior gardeners club. Its cool. I get the tree donated every year by a local garden center and all the kids go home with a sapling from the USFS (with my card stapled to it). Its a win win for everybody. The PR from the newspaper, my card going home with 30 kids and the feeling I get from making a difference. Those kids will remember that forever and quite possibly tell their kids about the tree they planted as they drive by it. I've been doing it for 4 years now and it gives me great satisfaction every year.

2 years ago, the NJ chapter of the ISA organized a 21 tree salute to honor 9-11 victims. There are 21 counties in NJ and each county planted a tree. I represented Somerset county, so it was a special day for me. /forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Way to go tree dr, although you look a little young to be planting trees. I do like the ideal about sending the cards home.

ideal

Not to be too critical, but didn't you just correct someone for their spelling?

The word "ideal" could almost be used in that context. The concept of sending your cards home is an ideology on which to create future business. You could say that you like the idiom of sending cards home, which would be a bit nobby so ideal works instead.

But his spelling was fine if you accept ideal in that context, but my guess is it was a mistake. If we corrected everyone for their spelling it would get dull.

Yeah ok, I'm with you on that one. Just thought I'd try my hand at the old english grammar thing! The only thing I'd beat you on.

BTW I have a great grammar challenge if you or anybody else is up for it.

Ok, I'm looking for a grammaticaly correct sentence with the word "and" in it five times in a row. You can use any reasoning you like to set the context for that sentence, or a subjective argument for how it can't be done.

While looking on the net for the most concise way to explain this one I found a statement that suggests that its possible to have 21 "and"(s) in a row. However there was no proper expaination for this so I've been figuring it out and now I think it is possible.

Initially, to get 5 and(s) you need to have a context, and for one of the ands to be the subject. In this case the subject "and" will be written "AND" to make it clearer.

A fish and chip shop owner wants a sign made that says "Fish-AND-chips"

A signmaker makes one that says "Fish AND Chips."

The shop owner says "no, I wanted to have a hyphen between Fish and AND and AND and chips"

Now onto the 21 ands!!

The above would have been clearer if you put "no, I wanted to have a hyphen between "Fish" and "AND" and "AND" and "chips""

So, to explain how to write the above statement, you would say "the original statement would be clearer if quotation marks had been placed before Fish, and between Fish and and, and and and AND, and AND and and, and and and AND, and AND and and, and and and Chips, as well as after Chips"

Clear??

In Minnesota, May is celebrated as Arbor Month. Since the weather on the north and south borders can be a month apart the decision was made a few years ago to have a month long party for trees.

This year we will be showing in the Healdsburg Plaza.
I put out a knot board and we have a climbing demo. One of the other companies in town has a kid's saddle so we put kids in it and pull them up about 3'-4' and swing them around. We also have handouts from the ISA on not topping trees and the benifits of proper pruning. We also put out a bunch of different gear that looks interesting.

I do not think handing out little trees is a good idea at all!

For one, more than half the trees die. And the trees are also usually tottally not appropriate for the planting areas. Remember 'right tree right location'?
So I am opposed to doing this. But it is a great venue to promote proper Arboriculture and to get to know your community.

Arbor day is a day to celebrate TREES! not turn it into just another self promoting advertisment! We get that enough from just about every angle anyway. (if in doubt just look to the left of your computer screen ? ? ? !
I think a far greater battle is to just get your average homeowner to properly care for their plants and to raise the 'bar' of our profession.

Self promotion is a by-product of what I do, not the main reason. The idea is to have little Jimmy and Cindy take home the tree and Mom and Dad will see my card, prompting them to call me out to their property to explain proper arboriculture.

I enjoy the speaking part of it, the kids plant a donated tree in a highly visible location and they go home with a gift. Its a win win for everyone.

As far as swinging a kid around in a kids saddle, I would not recommend it. Wait 'till one of them falls out of a tree after your demo and see what happens. The knot board sounds cool though. This is just my opinion of course.
