Almost made myself a stain

I rigged a huge piece today that didn't exactly go where I wanted it to. In fact it slammed back into the tree very close to where I was. I think I jumped out of the way...I jumped..dont know if that saved me or not. IT Happened fast
As soon as it slammed the tree...the guys on the ground ditched it into the curb (BROKEN). I think they saved my life...it all happened so fast.

The piece was pie cut and had it released this wouldn't have happened but the hinge closed, I did my usual, ascend a little and kick the shiot out of it. I kicked and kicked but there was too much meat. I was even swinging into it karate kick style but to no avail. It had to be cut.
I repelled down to it, NO flip line of coarse, made the cut and then.....BAMMO! It rotated and hit the tree faster than the guys on the ground could let it down.

I feel like such a total dumass
I'm embarrassed
To add insult to injury(ego) and a broken curb, my camera didn't get it because I forgot to delete some crap off my memory card. The 1st bit I filmed will be posted later...nothing special but only 2 minutes long so hopefully watchable.

Im happy Im not a stain
Love you bitches
Even you Jomoco, sorry for acting like a jerk the otherday

Damn son! I'll bet that made an impression you won't soon forget. That probably scares me as much as anything... getting squished between a big hunk of wood and the trunk.

I subbed for a company after that happened to their climber, had to finish the tree, it was bloody. He cut too big, the piece fell and the butt came back at him when the tip hit. Messed him up, serious internal injuries topped off with large scale blunt trauma.

I'm glad you're OK, cuz if you miss the Fall Climb... we're gonna kill you and put you on the barby along the cats we rescue.

The bigger the piece, the more you have to check that everything is right before making the final cut. It can take more time to get the box perfect, but it's worth it.

I heard Tomthetreeman is bringing some extra cats for grilling.

Jesse, I am glad you are able to tell us about this, and not have someone else post it while you are in a hospital bed. Rigging big wood always has the potential for a nightmare if you are not on top of your game.

Sounds like you need a GRCS to MAKE that log go where you want it to go Jesse!

I'm glad you're ok mate!

Spend a little money and live to be a thick skinned cantankerous old climber too!

Hey Gord, that wouldnt have worked in this situation due to the location of my gin point , direction of the lean of the spar I was cutting, other factors involved too I suppose.
It will never happen again.
Thanks for the kind words guys.
Especialy the part about killing and grilling me.
Good to have friends

There will be no "stains" over here at Tree Buzz mister!

Glad you can share that. I can sort of make it out, in my mind, what happened. Are you any good at using the Paint program to make a small illustration?

Wow, Jesse that is scary - so glad you're all right. I appreciate you sharing this with us, it brings to the forefront of everyone's mind that 'it' can happen.

Easy to say after the fact I know, but couldn't you have picked it back up and finished the cut? Just trying to visualize your situation and imagine a solution. I've seen sections do what you described here. And yes it happens faster than most people can react.

Hey Jerry, Jommoco said it best, I need a GRCS. We could have cranked it tight to begin with.

Mabey Rocksntrees can give us some insight from his perspective below. I think the peice easily exceeded 1000 pounds. Had my cut released, Im sure it would have been fine but the combination of me backig out early AND a lack of pretensioning is what I beleive went wrong.

Trees are amazing. There is soooo much kenetic energy up there waiting to be released. I rspect them a little more now.

Ummm... if it's waiting to be released it's static, not kinetic energy... see, that's what happens when you flirt with girls in class and play with their hair when you should be listening to your 5th grade teacher...

Mine was hot so I listened in class and flirted with Patricia Oliver during recess.
