Instead of us doing your homework, I don't mean to pick on you Chris, and you'll know much more.

Don't worry Tom, the thought hadn't even crossed my mind. I appreciate you posting the link and you can be that I'll check it out.

Velocity(11mm) and Tachyon(11.5) should work great. Is Lava more then 11.5. Pi at 11.7 should be worth a try, 10mm might be to fast judging from one of the claimed attributes is its speed.

Dave,
I measured PI at about 12.2mm and Lava and this surprised me, at about 12.6mm. That doesn't mean they wouldn't work though; I know a lot of people that use a Grigri (11mm max) on full 1/2" rope and it works just fine. I just get a little squirmy using gear outside manufacturer's specs.

Ron, thank you very much for taking the time and posting the video and pictures for us.

Very interesting stuff.

You're more than welcome. I get so much from you guys, I'm delighted to be able to give a little something back.

Storrick is an interesting resource, but keep in mind he is cave oriented and I'm not sure if he's had any tree climbing experience and especially not arborist experience.

[/ QUOTE ]

[ QUOTE ]
Agreed, Storrick is cave based. Sometimes he misses an application that we use for a particular tool. He had gotten some arbo tools and does admit that he doesn't know how they would work, either in caves or trees.

Guys, I'm quite up front about saying that NONE of my comments apply to ANY device except for the exact ones that I own and for the uses that I use them for. That certainly means that I claim to know absolutely nothing about tree work, and my site is not appropriate for arborists.

That's the legal BS <grin>, but it has a reason behind it. Even in the cave community, people don't always take care to make sure that they are using the same device that I am and are using it for the same thing that I do (and by the way, my usage never involves a chain saw). Manufacturers change things and sometimes a small change makes a big difference.

For an example from the arborist community, I received dozens of hate emails from people who disagreed with my comments om my Petl Pantin. Perhpas they never noticed that Petzl changed the design and fixed the problem? My first one disintegrated within three feet: that one was a lemon. Petzl fixed the problem. My second one didn't. That was all many years ago.

Learning ropework by reading the internet is, well, silly. I hope that no one is reading my site to learn anything. For me to teach tree work to professional arborists would be absurd. I sure don't know why an arborist would do that.

All that said, in the last couple years, I've been welcomed to several arborist sites and I've gotten to know some great people as a result of my silly collecting hobby. Some of them find my site entertaining, and I'm glad for the recognition.

Y'all be safe up there.

Re: A comparison of the Eddy and the Grigri (video)

Gary,

Since you quoted me, I just want to be sure this is clear: My comments were only to remind 'us' that there are differences in perspective that people have about gear based on their applications. And, I think that's how you took the comments, but sounds like you've already had your fair share of 'hate' remarks and I want to be sure my remarks don't/didn't come across that way.

And, welcome to TreeBuzz!

Thanks for taking the time, great video Ron. I like the looks of the Eddy. Have you had a chance to try the Unicender yet?
