1972 magazine article 'safe' climbing guide.....

we are so lucky by comparison;
i wonder how many over confident,
put spurs on wrong feet and
cuss they aren't sharp enough ;
types this spawned??

What a find!

That's from the time when I was beginning to see a career in the trees. My first climb in a harness and using a chainsaw was in about '74.

So happy to see where we are now.

And just think, top pay was probably $2.25 to $2.75 an hour! In 1970 i was making $1.60 an hour landscaping.

Things sure have changed a bit since then, but the basics are still the same. That was before my time though, my parents were in elementary school when that article came out...

I made $1.925..yes...half cent, union job...as a bagger at the grocery store in '72. I wonder if pay has gone up?

Do any of you know if the author is still around? Any of you guys friends of his? Larry Holkenborg from Sandusky, OH. Looked like a pretty big business. He's mentioned briefly in a 1993 issue of TCI magazine.

Many things have changed, but in 69 I was getting decent pay, climbing on a BryDan articulating leg loop saddle and using 1/2" double braided lines. Being lucky can help in this business.
