I've got the DMM hook on about 50' of 10mm Reep Schnur that I'm planning to set up as a double-ended lanyard thing with a snap or carabiner on the other end. I've found that I rarely used my previous lanyard on the side Ds of my harness, but instead often used it as a secondary climbing system...
@Tom Dunlap with the winning suggestion here. I had another company (Bartlett, they actually sent an arborist instead of the removal crew lead) take a look at that tree today. They're proposing 5 brace rods through the cracked junction, a cable up higher (he indicated galvanized steel cable...
Thanks everyone!
The forestry manager in my city didn't have much to say but reiterated the wait until fall / winter advice for pruning, so that does seem pretty universal, and I'm wondering why it wasn't mentioned by the company I talked to -- they're one of the few that's actually owned by an...
I'm in a western suburb of Cleveland, OH, and the internet says oak wilt is all over the state. I've got several large oaks, mostly red oak. Unfortunately, despite being otherwise healthy, one of them is starting to crack in half and likely needs to be removed. Since it's next to the road and...
I think @Jzack605 hit the nail on the head -- I've run into this in the past, people just sending an "estimator" to glance at a tree for 30 seconds and write up an estimate. The key, I think, is that I'd not be looking for a "free estimate" but a "paid consultation."
@ATH Thanks for the broad...
Yeah, I get it -- it's a bit like asking for medical advice on the internet :D
Let me try removing the liability a bit:
A) If roughly one-fifth of a silver maple with 5 codominant stems is removed, is it basically killing the tree a couple years down the road, or are there methods to preserve...
My backyard has a silver maple which splits into 5 stems around 4-6 feet off the ground. In yesterday's windstorm (northern Ohio), I noticed that as one of the stems waved in the wind, it made visible a crack extending from where that stem joins another down toward the base. I don't think the...
Funtime activity today: Dealing with some black locusts leaning over a barn. The strategy ended up being standing on the barn roof using pole saws to remove branches small enough that they could fall on the roof without damaging it to get some weight and bulk off the top. We then got a rope at...
@yoyoman Looking at the HHx, I saw the note that you 'strongly recommend the SwivaEye" but offer an option with a small ring. I have a DMM Focus swivel on my bridge (bridge through the large removable shackle, climbing system connected to the small green swivel). This looks like it has an even...
As a guy with a desk-bound day job, but an enjoyment of trees and an appreciation of new challenges, are there opportunities to casually learn more experienced people?
I discovered that technical tree climbing is a thing about a year ago, and since then I've accumulated a fair bit of gear and...
Probably never :p should probably change that ;)
@JeffGu thanks, that's an interesting analysis on their behavior when wet.
Sounds like nobody so far thinks the tree needs to go, that's reassuring (y) Would still like to get somebody experienced & competent locally to take a look at it with...
