Looking at a Vermeer 552

I assume it's a similar construction, just larger. any problems? I know someone who had an 852 catch fire on a job site.
That’s crazy but I would bet that’s happened probably on every machine made.
Crank broke in half and had to get a new engine.
Cummins 4 cylinder problem not a Vermeer problem
2200 hrs and not even blew a hydraulic line
85hp non def also yellow jacket teeth are far superior compared to green teeth and never used a revolution wheel

we run a 552... been good, the "auto sweep" feature... meh?... surprisingly staple on hills.. One lil difference of opinion from this thread, is that I prefer the green teeth over yellow jackets...
I feel that green teeth chip containment is far worse than the yellow jackets and with the green teeth they claim you get 3 sides but I never seem to be able to achieve that vs yellow jackets I feel you get to full sides and they last a lot longer.
The pockets also have more contact area with the teeth with 2 sides less contact area with 3. Meaning pockets last longer also.
IMO

Kinda sorta agree with you... The yellow jackets do last longer it seems, And I haven't had enough hours with the green teeth and new pockets to know yet. your correct about chip containment and size for that matter (depending on species) The one plus that I prefer is that the green teeth seem to cut better, meaning less strain during the sweep. Now, I seem to always be catching a corner stone that marks property lines, or something that dulls a tooth quickly. I yield to the amount of hours your equipment sees vs. ours also. All I can say, for our dynamic, at this point I'm happier with the green teeth. The caveat is that we aren't production based. Maybe if someone hadn't scrapped our new yellow jackets (accidentally?) I would never had tried something different., ;-)

Bump,
This machine is great. 30 percent more power than my carlton but more than twice the production. Changed all the filters in less than an hour and I'm impressed. So far I give this machine an A+

It came with the VCS wheel system. Not completely hyped about that since tooth replacement is 30 bucks a pop but Jeff's Sharpening is about to start sharpening the carbide and he said they're on their way to re-tipping them.
I’ve never ran their new system but I’ve heard very good things about it

I like how there's easily replaceable wear plates on the wheel. The teeth have two sides to them so they can be flipped. I'm on the coast so there's nothing but rocks and ledge.
Yeah I cringe every time I see a rock when stumping I’m not sure I could handle what you guys go through day to day.
