Looking at a new 15xp. Bandit dealer said they recently switched over from ford 5.7 to psi 6.0. on there gas engines. Seeing if anyone has feedback on the machine so far? Currently running diesel but thinking about adding or switching. Thanks

Check out this one on the 15xp, it’s 7 pages, and a couple other threads on specific issues have popped up. https://www.treebuzz.com/forum/threads/bandit-15xp-review-brand-new.39554/
The GM 5.7 seems to be less popular than the Ford 6.2, haven’t heard of the 6.0 (guessing the GM in 3/4 ton trucks?) used yet. We have the 6.2 and it’s been flawless, but low hrs and I haven’t run the 5.7 so…

Thanks for the heads up all. I’ve read through that 15xp post in the past but I’ll revisit it. From what my dealer says there no longer putting the ford in its this new psi engine. They’ve been running it in cali all year but that’s all I know. I currently have a 15xpc with a cat diesel. It rips but I’m fed up of the emissions shit and the having to deal with cat on any issue becuase bandit won’t touch engine stuff. Headache and a half.

Interesting, I’d be curious if other dealers said the same thing on engine choices? Gas options they’ve used are GM psi 4.3 and 5.7, and Ford 6.2. Did the dealer say the 5.7 was a Ford? If so I’d believe less.

Not the same chipper/engine you are asking about, but around two years ago I got my 12XP with the PSI 4.3 gas, in large part because I was told it was going to be easier to service in my area, and that I know another company has had a number of troubles with their recent purchases of the diesel engine versions.

Happy with it?

These are the two engines in question. The ford is only offered in last years model one. Builds are the psi

No complaints and have had no troubles with the engine or chipper. It's the 145hp, can't recall if they have different power ratings on the 4.3. Coming from a 2008 BC1000 to the Bandit was a hell of an upgrade. I've used a number of older Bandits over the years, but don't have direct experience with other actually modern chippers.

Also would be interested in what’s gone bad with the CAT and hrs etc. always curious about gear downtime!
Def lock out code issues. Have had to fight with cat to cover. First time was within first year of owning. Pulled code that basically said it was run out of def but it wasn’t. Cat didn’t want to cover cost so I had to eat a $1300 diagnostic repair bill. 2 weeks later same code. Took it back and went to war. They pulled tank, replaced all lines, filters, sensors etc was a 10k plus bill and after a hell of a battle they covered it under warranty. Was without machine for almost 2 months!

Electric sensor bs between computer and engine. Cat blames bandit, bandit blames cat a big giant F show! I would get intermittent codes that would lock me out of the machine, then have to drive it two hours to the valley for cat to diagnose and fight again for them to cover it. All around horrible experience. Talking with bandit techs that no longer work for bandit they claim the computers ecg there running doesn’t work well with cat engines somethg about the wiring harnesses? Bandit won’t do shit with it because they say they can’t do anything engine related. They can’t even pull or delete error codes. What the F? What can they do change the blades?

Machine has 400 hours and tears when it’s running and currently has been running great knock on wood. But been a nightmare otherwise.

I demoed morbark Vermeer and bandits this summer. The morbark was horrible couldn’t eat shit and slower than molasses. The new ax17 is pretty mean but it’s 130k the Vermeer 15 with vertical feed wheels actullay ate pretty damn well. I just have a hard time going Vermeer never liked the machines much. But RDO up here has a good rep for taking care of there customers so it’s a tough call. And I only ran there diesel 15 not the gas. Kind of want to get equity out of my machine while it’s still got it and get into something hopefully more reliable for a while.

Long winded 2 cents.

The quotes I just got the current model with the ford is 3k more than the new model with psi for whatever that’s worth?
Get an 18xp with the ford is my vote
I’m not at all disappointed in ours. Not one major issue knock on wood!
Coming up on 1k hours sound like a clutch job maybe on the horizon. Oversized solid feed tray for machine and hand feeds super easy! Chips like beast. Under cdl territory on the scale.

So no longer can you get the ford even for the 3k up charge ?

Which ford engine do you have in the 18?

I've had trucks with the 6.0. It's reliable and a powerhouse. My chipper now has the 4.3l vortex psi engine in my altec dc1317hp. It works amazingly well. The weird part is some of the standard 4.3 parts from the parts store don't work. I.e I have to get a distributor and plug wires from PSI. Their manuals and diagrams are pretty good, and their support is fair but a bit more expensive than Napa.

The Ford 6.2 is a legendary power plant, with parts everywhere. They are 400-500k engines in the super duty’s. Timing chain tensioners are their only problem, and take 2 hours to fix. I saw a 18 XP 6.2 with 4300 hours on it, and owner said it’s original besides the tensioner.

I have a 15XP with the Ford, and love it. Sips fuel, at about 10+ hours of constant run time per 40 gallon tank. Usually ends up being 15k in completed jobs per tank.

I would not touch a PSI/GM knockoff, as the 5.7 and the 145hp had many issues, and PSI has on average, bad customer service.
