Can anyone become a safe effective climber?

Story: Long, long time ago a friend and I, for a giggle, went for the Dental College admission test in our Province as a potential path to University. I found out I could not carve a piece of chalk (apparently a pre-determinant for later success as a dentist). So as the Seinfeld soup guy would say - "No Dental School For You - Now Get Out"! So absolutely no, everybody isn't cut out to do everything (however much later I still had a stab at wood carving, just didn't mess around with chalk anymore). Cheers

I have a super employee that works very hard and is excellent in lots of ways! But, I’m sincerely, concerned that if I start training him to be a climber! A tree accident is just waiting to happen (note: I have trained excellent climbers before, that probably even surpassed my abilities today)

Why do I feel this way: because in HIS own words he is forgetful and not very observant…and I have noticed that there is some truth to his own observations.

So in other words: are there people that just simply don’t have the aptitude or dexterity to become SAFE and proficient climbers? Or can anyone learn given enough time?
Most people can't become proficient climber.

How about an informal test only you know about, a rec climb where buddy self teaches/educates himself prior to burdening you with in person supervision/instruction. See how much fish to watering is going on. My son figured out DRT and SRT in about 1 hour at age 8 or 10 can't remember. Spurs and chainsaw phase 2 pending clearing the rec climb. IMO. phase 1 climb lines and lanyarding and monkey barring. Do Tom Jones Delilah air humping as torture before introducing a Pantin :) or SRT

for entertainment

One thing you didn't mention is if he wants to climb. If he does, I'd have a talk with him about the short comings that you see and why that concerns you. He can't better himself in those areas without being made aware of the issue.

He’s indicated he’d like to try, but he’s not super keen, I think he just wants to “try it out” but in my experience: it’s the ones that just can’t wait to get in the trees, they often turn out to be the super ones :)

Rec climb seems to be the ticket then. Get him a good tie in point with no need to disconnect from his main tie in (minimal risk) and let him get a feel for what his coworkers are going through. It might make him an even better ground guy as he realizes what can help a Climber while aloft.

Probably won't be a rockstar Climber, buy he can be a Rockstar ground guy (if he isn't already) and the groundies can make a Climber look good.
