Earth First was founded by a fellow named Dave Forman and inspired by "The Monkey Wrench Gang" by Edward Abby. Great book read it if you have not. I'm pretty sure that these folks are a far cry from the Earth first I knew as a kid.
Actually I'm kind of into nature's signs and have had some profound experiences. But if I was wailing over the death of a tree I would make sure there was no cameras around. I suspect those people had other personal issues beside the destruction of old growth forests.
Trees talk? Come on... They express themselves through their habits of growth. They have life force and energy. A 24 hour cycle is their heartbeat. They're really cool, in fact wonderful and can strike awe, but talk, hmmm... Well, I never heard one scream when I fell it.
A couple of weeks ago my customer cried when we took down her half way dead Cottonwood. It was dying rapidly from Cytospora Canker (I feel like a broken record when I explain this to people around here). The tree was in a high traffic area, so it needed to come down before some one got hurt.
Yes, I understand it was a loss of a tree. That sucks. But, why cry when we were taking it down? Why not cry when she noticed half the tree dead? Or, when I gave her the diagnosis? It made us feel bad that we had this old widow crying when we were taking down her tree. We weren't the cause of the death of the tree, it was good ol' mother nature itself that killed the tree. --Well, specifically, it was a fungus.

When the dutch elm disease ran amok here, I had quite a few clients cry too.
Once we took down 42 huge dead or dying elms around a farm, When we left, the highest thing growing there was blackcurrant bushes.
I don't blame that lady one bit for getting a little wet around the eyes.
