If you're going to wear it doing tree work, it's going to break eventually. I love analog watches, especially automatics, but they're just too nice for work. I'd just get something cheap like this and swap it for your nice watch at the end of the day. If you are going to wear something nice, look at Hamilton and Tissot, and get a sapphire crystal.

Incidentally, I have been looking for a small watch or clock with a large face or numbers and some way to attach a small lanyard to hang on my saddle, something like this but with a hole through the body. Anyone have a recommendation?

I've had three of the G-Shock Casio watches... as Oroboros said, the band wears out long before the watch does. My oldest one has been through about four bands, but the crystal is so scratched up you can barely see through it.

Lately, I just go to WallyWorld and buy the El Cheapo watches when they go on sale for $4 or $5 each, and buy about five of them. Toss them when they quit working. I don't even replace the batteries, which are as much or more than the watch costs. The crystals take a beating on bark. I've buffed them out with a Dremel tool and gotten a little more life out of them.

Luckily, the Chinese can make a boatload of them a day, so they're always going on sale about three times a year. Last time, they had a shopping cart full of them, I think they were 3/$10 and I bought about 9 of them. I took the back off of most of them and took the batteries out until I actually need them, otherwise I'm afraid the batteries will go dead before I can break them all.

This one had a white watchband... not so much anymore. But, the watch refuses to die. Five dollar watch.

I absolutely LOVE my Tag Heuer!!!! 16 years worth of sailing, swimming, skiing, diving, etc. and still keeps time like a Swiss watch (no pun intended). It's picked up some scratches on the case and bracelet, but like @fall_risk alluded to, you couldn't scratch the sapphire crystal with a nuclear missile.

I wear it everywhere... except 2 places: I don't wear it when I'm turning wrenches on the car or when I'm doing tree work, ESPECIALLY climbing!! There's just too much risk of damaging either the watch or me! I think it's taking unnecessary risks to climb with either a watch or necklace on. The bracelet on my Tag is strong enough that if I got hung up, I think my wrist would pop off before the bracelet broke.

So either buy a cheapie (I'll carry an old cheapie with no strap in my pocket sometimes), or go without and just use your phone or the clock in the truck. When climbing, I just look at the groundies and point to my wrist and they'll hold up some fingers for me.

Edit: And since it's a chronograph, you'll have no problem timing your eggs!

this shows my point exactly, I know tree work is hard on ALL kit!,.. But sometimes/most times!!.. I don't have time to change watch to look pro for a client/girl-in-bar! And end up with big matte plastic "DIGITAL" monstrosity on wrist!!..

Ps: NO DIGITAL...

Pps: must time eggs!!
