Street Tree Stocking Levels

I was wondering if anyone knows what the recommended street tree stocking levels are for municipalities? Is there any research or articles on this?

In a perfect world I am sure every city would like to have 100% stocking, but for most cities that is most likely unrealistic. Do you think that even 75% is unrealistic?

Plantable space with regard to street trees is a relatively measurable quantity, but in the grand scheme, a very limited figure. Here are the results of our UTC in Providence:

Considering all plantable space, and finding a way to use it, is the best approach. Sorry if I derailed a bit.

I think most goals are actually set towards canopy cover, rather than stocking levels.

Jenette Monear has worked with a fellow to develop a program that projects plantable areas onto city maps. They did a portion of Dallas and could show the costs and benefits for putting various densities of trees into available planting spots.

Way beck when…If I recall correctly, the ideal stocking for street trees was around 100 trees per mile, which is equivalent to a tree about every 50 feet. But, don't quote me on this.
