Stainless steel vs. Aluminum

What do you think is the best for the Port-a-wrap?

Dispertion of heat is better on aluminum no? Why do they make it in stainless steel? Hévéa (French company) makes 'm in aluminium...

Advantages/Disadvantages ?

Thanx

Indeed, but heat dispertion is much less... so the possibility that your ropes burn is real i think

ps: not only héhéa makes them...

Stainless steel is stronger right?

Look at the WLL and ABS rather than the materials themselves, as they probably have different sizes of wall thickness, etc. to achieve good WLL.

Heat dissipation is better for aluminum but the ratio of metal to friction (heat producing) surface is pretty high so heat dispersion would be rapid for either one. Most of the ropes I've seen get smoked were rope on rope or rope on tree. I'm sure you could melt rope on a porty by running huge weight really fast but... well... don't do that.

The polished SS porty LOOKS super cool.

Keep in mind, 1 is made in China and 1 is made in the USA.
I have portys from the mid 80's and none of them have melted rope fibers on them. Melted rope fibers on a porty are an indication of too much friction, due to a combination of a heavy load and letting the rope 'run' too fast.
If I were to purchase a porty today, it would be the 601L (large steel w/black powder coat).

Who uses/ has used ice packs during the summer or on big pieces?

I imagine a black POW and maybe AZ sun would get it hot to start. I remember rock bars getting too hot to hold when they were in the NV sun in the summer, at elevation.

Norm, I have been wandering what exactally is going on with this Made In Chinastuff?

Are all the new ones made there, or which ones?
Is there need to worry about the quality of them now?
Are the manufacture's just trying to save a buck?
Who does manufacture them, I thought that Buckingham did, I might be mistaken? And if they do, aren't they suppost to be American Made?

If you could clarify this, I would appreciate it, and might make a difference when ordering in the future.

Well I went to Buckingham's site. And all they show is the port III, well and the mini. I don't know what it means, maybe they don't manufacture them any more.(or just the new ones)

I did notice that Sherrill shows them with their own tag on it. Maybe they have rights to it now? I hope they didn't buy it and send it over seas.

Well I am just specalating, so if someone can shed some light on the situation?

Buck still makes the Porty 3 and it's still made in Binghamton, NY, USA. That's why the name was changed to Porty 4. All models of the Porty 3 are made in the USA. Thanks for askin.

"TreeStuff is dropping the price on the classic Port-A-Wrap rigging device to compete with a new version on the market that is made in Asia. Buckingham Manufacturing, maker of the Port-A-Wrap leads the tree care industry in overall quality and value. Each Buckingham product is made proudly in the USA."

This is what is mentioned on treestuff.com...

Norm, why the black powder coat? I've got a Buck Porty 3 which isn't coated, how does the coating improve the porty?

Also, I wouldn't buy a lowering device that was Made in China, firecrackers - yes, lowering device - no.

I like the smoothness of the powder coat better than the nickel plate.
Just my personal preference.
