I would love to find an article or video that describes in detail about the proper techniques used in sharpening square chain. Any leads?

I realize it's an art and is more difficult to do by hand and most pros regrind when necessary, but I am curious, so no discouraging response please.

I cant hold my angles right to square file every tooth by hand and dont have the money for a square grinder. So I cheat and use the ATOP square file guide.

Here's the Bailey's video ad for ATOP

So TreeTrim, how do you like the guide? Worth the money? What are you cutting with it?

$200.

My guess is that most people start out filing round Okay, then with practice develop the touch for quality filing, outcome based on input of effort. My guess is that if a person can round file well, then with good input of effort, they will achieve good output of square filed cutting sharpness. Fine Print: Individual results may vary.

Makes quick work for a square touch up for me.

$200 is questionable IMO if you can find a square grinder used for $200-$400.
I know a friend that broke down and bought one so he could sharpen his 100' of looped chains all back. He is happy once he got the hang of it.

Just tested the square in the poplar, pine, spruce etc. I just use round in hardwoods for ease of touch ups in the woods.

I hand file and machine grind square chisel. I've been hand filing without a guide for about a year now and have been square grinding with a machine for about 15. It definitely cuts better with less strain on the operator.

Could you show a picture of your USG square grinder head attachment?

I don't have a photo handy but there's no difference from the standard that would show up in a photo.

Found photos of one. I see what you mean. If it wasnt for the 2 diamond dressers it would look like standard head in picture.

It appears the chain holder is setting at 0, what is the bottom slide [for each cutter side] set on 10 to 15 and what angle is the the square grinder attachment head set on to get at the cutter on yours? Pretty interesting set up.

Lot different then the way Silvey or Simington swing arm do it with wheel being stationary.
