splittail Q... will this work...

i seen this last night at tractor supply. i'm using a length cut from my climbin rope as a splittail now and it's REALLY worn i'm using a 3 under 2 over taughtline with an extra loop over and it ain't holdin anymore lol. I just don't have the resources to order one at the moment...

I think the working load limit was listed at around the 350 range, i'm 150, but i dont know if that wll is quoted right for tree work. I seen in samsons rope catalog that nylon's heat resistance is up there at 350 degrees with technora being the only better option, so would this work?

I was gonna grab some last night n try low n slow but keep gettin cold feet...

Given the cast of characters around here, don't be surprised if you get accused of trying to play a trick. Not a lot of tautline guys around here.

That rope would probably work but it's not ideal, it's also probably hard or impossible to splice.

If you use a tautline a piece of your climbing rope is the standard, or at least something of a similar diameter.
At $0.99/foot it costs the same as climbing rope. You could always get a length of climbing rope online, lots of places sell it by the foot.

If you want no worries, buy a split-tail from one of the better suppliers, most advertise on this site.

I'm guessing it is made in china, with no CE rating and not for life support...

I would not use it man...

I have a bluestreak split tail with a spliced eye that is like new and I never use it send my your addy and I'll mail it to you after Christmas :)

Merry Christmas!

Back in Europe all climbing kit must have a CE mark.
ANSI over here???
Life lines should have a min of 2400 Kg's Strenth 2.2 lbs to a Kg.. work out 5280 lbs..

Not sure if it's the same over here as it is back home?

I really appreciate it gibson, i've been meaning to get one for a month or two but don't have a cc to order one or a ride to the vermeer store on a day off...
i've been watchin youtube for a while now on all the different hitches out there and wanna update everything, but it's a bad time of year the old lady's keepin me broke lol...
I appreciate all the quick responses i try to just read n keep my mouth shut but i figured i'd ask on this one, kinda knew the answer I keep decidin not to try it...

Tank,

this is my way...when i buy a new climbing line i cut off some pieces and make split tails...every time i buy new climbing line i get a different color so i mix the colors up and never use the same color split as the climbing..works well and i enjoy the savings..

lol I had a small skaters helmet but it's split in the back, i still use it on dead climbs or pine trees tho...

my add is 810 e. orange ave in eustis florida 32726... let me know at least the shipping n stuff guys and ill send somethin money order or check or somethin thru the mail i reckon. I appreciate it alot this forum is the s***t i learned how to build a honda chopper on a forum about 10 yrs ago n learned thats the first thing i go to when tryin to learn somethin new there is no comparison in tree work that i've seen.
im 27 now it's funny how the older u get the more you go from knowing everything to realizing i don't know a damn thing lol. keepin my mouth shut n eyes open is keepin the foot outta mouth n i'm learnin alot on this site...

oh n youtube lol...

yeah surfarmer i did that i'm not sure what kinda rope mine was originally to be honest. it's like half inch or so, it started that way anyhow. now it's squared up kinda bad it ain't round no more lol. n the splittail makes really big knots everything slides but a really big taughtline lol. i'm still on my first rope a hand me down from my old foreman that taught me to climb. i started as a groundsman, did that for a couple months n decided i wanted to climb. everyone laughed at me n said i'd have to work the ground for years before that happened. so i started workin side jobs with the foreman/climber for used gear n started in my off time. went to a new company with the foreman, climbed for them for a year, that fell apart over political bs... ive been on as the foreman/climber for a new company now and things are goin great I love my job, just need to get to next year to upgrade everything...

I gotta put that on the calendar, i'll most likely be there...

was looking at the post, i wonder if you have to fill anything out or just show up?? n if there's like an admission fee or anything...

Participation is free. Competitors are 40 and over, but you'll have a great time participating as a judge, timer, or facilitator. You should sign up and fill out the waiver in advance though..also helps them to know how many folks are being fed and such.

I don't really know whether this idea has any merit, but I wondered, as a stop-gap, whether you might try tying a blakes hitch rather than your tautline. I thought it might bring different surfaces of the split tail to bear on the climbing line and give you a little more grab time.. that or switch the saddle attachment and rope/hitch ends of your split tail.

Best solution of course is to get a few feet of new/rated rope.

that...and there's a competition just up the road in georgia the following weekend. I'm laying low on that one, since Robin Trower is playing an outdoor show in St Pete that weekend though ;-) All trees and no tunes makes Richard a dull boy!

Perciate it gibson bigtime, pm me around then so I can send ya somethin...

yeah I move it around alot, i use both ends (use a scaffold knot for the one eye so i can switch ends) it's just wore really bad. the blakes keeps slidin too lol. this is the second splittail i've cut from my rope, it's lasted a couple months but yeah my rope is well past wore the bossman said he'd finance me one I just ain't pressin for it till after the year cause weve been slow (gettin slower) and i know we ain't bringin in the funds right now.

Welcome Tank, If you dont end up getting some gear from one of the other buzzers hit me up and ill send ya some new split tails and a HELMET, Be safe, Climb safe, and Merry Christmas
