Shop Security

Anyone have CCTV systems installed to look over their shop and yard. We are looking to have about 8 cameras installed by a local security company. I am told NVR as opposed to DVR is the way to go?

Well, the big question for me is video quality during both day and night. NVR or DVR doesn't matter if they're recording crappy video. The main difference between the two systems is where you want it's "brain". In an NVR(network video recording) the cameras are "smarter", more to them because they do all the encoding at their end, then send processed video to the storage recorder. In a DVR(digital video recording) the recorder is where the brains are, it takes the raw video signal from the camera and does the processing, encoding, and storage there. You can get high end cameras and recorders in both styles of systems.

All that said, the main reason NVR is pushed lately versus DVR is that NVR is easier to install and is more easily modified after installation. With the right cameras, you don't even need a power line running to them, it all goes through the single network cable and draws power from the interface panel(speaking as an installer, I love PoE, Power over Ethernet. We used to have to deal with special outlets coming through ceiling tile, because you couldn't have outlets in drop ceilings). Also, being a network connection, all you have to do to put a new camera in or relocate an old one is run a new cat 5 cable. The old way, you'd need a video line, a power line, and then if it's a PTZ(pan tilt zoom) camera you'd need a RS control cable as well. NVR's also tend to interface with today's gadgetry better, so if you want to say, check the security feed from home via your ipad, an NVR based system would probably be advisable.

As far as name brands, can't help ya there, I'm a little out of current there. Sony and panasonic have always made good optics when it comes to security, imho.

I can tell you that if your installer suggests anything from Zmodo or Swann, RUN. Cheap crap, buy it at any discount store, electronics website, etc.

Should have put a smily face up with my reply. It was a bit of a joke. Read Aldo Leopold, "Escudilla" and you will discover what a set gun is. It is a short read, 15-20 minutes tops.
