Not only to start studying for the certified arb cert but to further educate myself and everything pretty much specially anatomy pruning not just the pruning cuts but the science behind it and all that shit anything you guys would think is a good baseline book to start with what I’m gathering is that shigos literature is up there any advice would be appreciated thanks gents.

Most of Alex Shigo's Forest Service research, including his informational stuff is freely available from the Forest Service Treesearch site. I see 33 publications there.

Taking the OP at face value in wanting to know the science, The best starting point there is Shigo, 1984.

Be aware that few of those are written for arborists. I especially like the first photoguide, pre-CODIT book: Shigo and Larsen, 1969.
The CODIT Shigo and Marx, 1977 booklet itself is there. Now, keep in mind that the above are very large files, so download responsibly.

By all means check out A New Tree Biology and Modern Arboriculture, to be sure! Still in print from the publisher.

whoA! great tip on those Shigo resources @KTSmith !
I want to +1 that Illustrated Guide to Pruning. Especially reading after looking through many of Shigos photos of decay etc. in the books mentioned. With those concepts and imaged in mind, the approaches discussed in the Guide to Pruning are amazing.

I’ve had terrible luck finding Shigo books at libraries.
Thats because they get stolen. I had a full set of CA study materials housed in the referen e room of our local library and they all walked away never to be seen again. I lent my signed copy of ANTB to a student who never returned it. After that I DON'T LEND MY BOOKS!

I've gotten in the practice of making two library cards when I loan a book. One is a picture of the book held up near the face of the person. The other is a note card with all contact info that goes in a wood bowl that my Dad turned. As I go to hand the book the the person my grip tightens and we have a momentary tug of war. I look them in the eye and tell them that I'll turn into Josh Randall the Bounty Hunter and track them down!
