Scan Tool for Freightliner

So our bucket truck (2020 Freightliner M2 106 with the standard Cummins) just threw its first code. Just a yellow engine symbol, not the yellow “check” symbol. Truck still operates perfectly but I know something is out of parameter and these things just tend to get worse. Thought I’d hook up my scan tool to see what was up, but then I see it has the round green port, not the standard OBD II like a car would have. So I bought an adapter:

No dice. The truck won’t talk to my cheap scan tool. A lot of you guys are probably laughing at me right now, and justifiably so. I should have known it wouldn’t be that easy.

So the question is; does someone know of or recommend a reasonably priced scan tool that is compatible with Freightliner? I’d just like to have the ability to get a general idea what’s up without taking the truck out of production to go to the shop. I don’t mind spending for a decent scan tool, but if we’re talking $1,200 and it’s ONLY going to do Freightliner, then I guess we’ll just run it to the dealer. TIA.

Yeah. Harbor Freight’s probably a good place to start. Google had me a bit confused as to compatibility and terminology.

I bought a Nexiq USB link in a private sale that I use for my Isuzu. It was a good deal not sure how much they go for officially. Also, you need the software installed on a laptop for your specific truck. It is great to have. I got most of my money back when the diesel shop tried to claim they cleared the check engine light that "wasn't on because the bulb was burnt out".

The laptop thing is what I was afraid of. Was hoping to get a tool to simply point me in the direction of the fault (misfire, emissions, fuel, etc). I don’t need advanced diagnostic capabilities.
