Kathy, You inspire me!! I love what you offer your employees. I don't know you, but I can tell you care about people. Our industry is better with companies like your setting the bar really high, I am going to aim for that as well.

thanks royce! we may not have met but i bet we have friends in common. maybe you know ben rubinfeld, who is an arborist/forester in vermont? he worked for me for a while. plenty of competition folks as well. your company sounds like mine about 12 years ago :). best of luck!

Kudos Kathy. I echo the sentiments that Royce expressed. It is refreshing to see a company that gives as much as they can instead of as little as they can. Inspirational on so many levels.

I'm surprised you are still looking.

Were you at a climbing competition in NH in a cemetery in the poring rain?

Wait, no cranes ? I'm out! Seriously though, good luck sounds like a nice place to work.

I was there, along w/ Rich H., who was also living in Ohio at that time. (2007 at Valley Cemetery Arboretum)
We were at Work Climb.
We were soaked. Rich got the chapter to donate ISA sweatshirts for some volunteers so we had some dry clothing.

Back to Kathy's search !

Before I retired, I made many, many months long business trips to the Tacoma (Seattle) area. (several years of accumulated time)
Great area of the country, and nice folks.

Seattle has really great trees and great arborist's like Kathy Holzer to care for them. You could not get a better opportunity to learn, and have some fun with a great team!

still looking, backlog down to 6 weeks but my crew has not missed any work yet this winter.
drew, email me a resume with some kind of cover letter and i'll get back to you.

oh, and people - if you are not 100% willing to move to seattle, don't waste your time and mine. i am willing to train but you need to own your own gear and have at least a year of experience climbing every day.

Seattle had a high cost of living. Moving to a large city can be intimidating.

Some insight into how your crew members make it work, where they affordably live, and some Seattle perks and cool stuff might help people get onboard with this great opportunity.

The rain takes getting used to. Luckily conifers make good umbrellas. Winter time is often high in the 40s, low in the 40s, chance of rain. Two days ago, I wished for rain gear after 4 hours of working in the rain. We had cold and dry weather recently, and a some mostly dry and warm. This temperate climate will spoil a person. I do use my Coolvest occasionally in the summer. It gets into the 90s every summer, but not oppressive hot or cold, like some places.

Seattle area has mad gardening appeal, so lots of good plants to work with.

thanks sean. i figure seattle can speak for itself - the job i'm offering has enough benefits in and of itself that i expect we'll find just the right climber(s) who are already inclined to come to the PNW. i can be patient. did two interviews this week, they just don't all land online :)

fwiw: this is a tree company built by a purist climber who ate/drank/lived climbing for many years, and it was built to be the company she (i) would want to work for. that right there is a perk for the zen athlete tree lover whose world is trees.

just hired one great climber from ohio, and we have the great good fortune to also have added a great NATS instructor, Phillip Kelley, as half-time operations manager/trainer. still looking for one more climber with 2 yrs experience. big things are happening at out on a limb - shoot me an email if you'd like more info kathy@outonalimbseattle.com
