Quote to prune

Just got this email:
"I took pictures of these trees in my backyard today to send to tree companies for quotes on trimming them back from power lines and over home. They have damaged the roof, siding and many more places over the past three years as strong winds have thrown branches. As I looked up at this amazing speciman, the experience was almost tear jerking to think it was have to be cut back tremendously. It is so beautiful how it spans out and reaches so high.

Just wanted to share its beauty with you. I really wish the house wasn't built so close to it. I'm not getting much feedback from tree companies. How much would you charge to prune this beauty for the safety of the home and evaluate its condition. I am concerned that their may be some damage to the tree.

Thank you for your time and what you do as a profession. The world needs more people like you."

How would you respond?

I would tell them I would love that tree right in that spot if I lived there. The email contains language that signifies that the homeowner values the organism, and is craving real knowledge of tree physiology and biomechanics. This would be a slam dunk if the savings account is flush.

I hear ya SZ, tho I'm not sure if she craves more than safety under the tree. curious that no other arb (many closer) replied to her earlier email. I quoted a ball park range min/max. to choose from.

I was mainly trying out the pic attachments; worked pretty easy. ;)

It sounds like the owners might have just enough information and knowledge to be dangerous. The trees are really outstanding, appear to be in reasonable good shape and need just a little bit of pruning. A great opportunity to educate the owner on proper course of action in their care. I would be concerned that the wrong person would talk them into excessive

The pictures look great on my phone. I can see myself getting back into buzzing shape in no time

They have given you some insight into their mindset and values. That being said, it will take some more questions to really ascertain how much they understand about proper tree care and if they can be worked with as far as pricing goes. The price will be the price and may take some creativity to see the proper work is performed in a manner that their budget supports. Otherwise someone else could come in cheap and do a hack job that will look like it solves the clearance problems but undermines the tree. Interested to hear how this plays out.

I'm not at all interested in how this plays out. In my mind I would have recommended about 3/4 of a day of pruning (cabling, if warranted), done some soil work, and called it a $2,400 introduction. Client cultivation to begin three years later.
It's all so simple. In my mind.

Sure, but that assumes they have that kind of money to lay out on this. I just wouldn't want to see this go to some hack for half that or less who just comes in hacks all the limbs over the house and wires and calls it good.

"Looks like a good opportunity to educate a willing client on the benefits of crown cleaning and good end-weight reduction pruning."

Agreed: What's the fastest best way to do this, while speccing and bidding online and still get the yob and make enough to get a new paddle for my kayak?

Nevermind the pruning, the tree isn't on her mind. She doesn't mention your muscles, but she's been thinking about them. She was close, and probably typed several quick little salvos, trying to find something that might stick. But her timid, frugal pinky finger kept pushing down the delete button wiping her advances away, until she was left with that one universal platitude, where the earth itself is blessed to have you on it.

Wow.

AD, you must agree, she has a very good point!

Nice. I prefer sail. Nothing better than working the wind.

As long as there is wind...My early climbing saddle was a bosuns chair; very simple, and a bit more comfy than a bowline on a bight.

She got the estimate yesterday; I'll probably call Sunday if no word. But with all this derailing, who knows where the thread'll be...One guy said he could make the needed cuts (all <4") without a pole. And he weighs more than me! 175. I don't see how.

If it were me, who also actually like you cares about this industry, trees, educating people, and what we do as a whole... I'd throw like $1800 Mebbe? See what they say. And if you feel like you have any wiggle room then see if you can talk it out with them. I'm sure after you speak with them about all of the benefits of a proper job and such, they would Probly want you to be the one to do it no matter.
