Question about an ART 2 Positioner...

Hello All,

I use an ART 2 swivel positioner on my lanyard. Normally, I have it attached to my lower Ds with a carabiner. It occurred to me today that I could simply omit the carabiner, and connect directly to my lower D (I use a Petzl Sequoia saddle). Other than losing the versatility of removing the ART with ease, is there another reason why I wouldn't want to do this? In all my time climbing, I have never removed it, so that doesn't seem compelling. However, perhaps there's a safety issue that I don't recognize.

Attached is a photo (not my actual setup) of the ART positioner with a carabiner used to connect to the saddle. On the Sequoia I can omit the carabiner.

Thank you.

I can’t think of any good reasons why not, as long as the release handle won’t get hung up against your leg or your saddle, I could see that happening because it is so close to your body.

the carabiner allows you to easily disconnect from either end of your lanyard without cutting the rope (remote possibility in a rescue scenario that you can't reach the non positioner end attachment point). They even make mini webbing slings as a cutaway on wirecore fliplines for just that reason.

However they also make whichard shackle type connectors for micro grabs that essentially bolt the rope grab to your d-rings... so... what ever works best for you

If you leave it on there all the time I would do it. I take my lanyard off to put things away. Mostly habit I suppose. However, it is nice to walk from one tree to the next keeping my saddle on without a tail dragging along to trip me. There is also that occasional time in the tree that positioning is awkward and it is easier to unhook the left side instead of the right to throw around a branch.

ATH, I totally agree. There are definitely occasions when I’m thinking, how the heck did I get tangled as such…*#{*#*%+%+%.

I’m hoping less stuff might have a worth it factor. I’ll give it a test.

Thank you.

a quickie is nice and compact and still easy-ish to change around. I use the new Dmm Extra small oval carabiner for my lanyard, and like it

What you are suggesting would drive me crazy, because I use different lanyard connection points depending on what I'm doing in the tree. You are not a working climber, so maybe it's not as big a deal. I've noticed on longer climbs, changing where my lanyard connects to the harness can help with hip soreness and other discomforts.
