PNW TCC

rich holmes and his crew of volunteers put on a great competition yesterday at avery park in corvallis OR. the weather held clear and cool until the bitter end, when it started raining. the master's tree was a HUGE hybrid walnut of some kind, the rest of the trees were gary oak, black walnut, linden..think that's it.

we had i think 23 competitors, all guys but me (where are you women...?). lots of good climbs all day, a smallish work-climb with some very sketchy possible swings that no-one thankfully took. men's masters competitors were dan kraus, ryan murphy, and gareth tudor-jones. the final master's scores were very close - w/in 2 or 3 points of each other i think. wish i could give you descriptions of their climbs but i was sequestered, and i don't have a pic of the final scoreboard either.

representing the pnw chapter at 2008 ITCC in st louis will be:

men's division: gareth tudor jones
women's division: kathy holzer

dan kraus was a gentleman as always in finally relinquishing his 10 yr hold on the chapter title, which record will likely never be beaten. rock on dan! congratulations and see you in st louis gareth!

more details anyone?
k.

What an awsome day! Great atmosphere and great showing by all. I think I might be able to get a picture of the final scoreboard for the prelims to post here. Gongrats to both Gareth and Kathy. Hope you're feeling better Kathy. If anyone was going to take it I'm glad it was you Gareth. FYI Sean from freesolo photography was there taking shots all day and has posted them on his website and can be viewed here.

Enjoy.

oh yeah Team Vancouver Island! Dan's was probably the best climb to watch because of his masterful way of bouncing back from a problem - the slipknot on his throwline came undone while pulling up his access line. Stayed cool the whole time and just made another awesome toss to go get the original line and carry on, hitting one of the stations on the way. A great lesson for all of us. Other than that he was golden and super smooth, as were Gareth and Ryan. Aside from the throwline thing, I don't know how the judges called it for Gareth and Murph. Murphy's magic redirect did it for me, but I'm biased. Lots of other great climbers and judges too, setting up awesome events and motivating us all. General Tree Service had some kind of spider lift that was a great help, which survived a direct hit from a swinging climber. Ouch!
Think someone called the Master's walnut a 'Paradox' - some kind of hybrid between a Black and English? Outstanding tree for sure.
Now lets all drum up more women to come climb and make Kathy work a bit harder for that chainsaw next time! You should have least arm wrestled one of your crew for it. . .
Has there ever been a Canadian PNW men's champ? Trees and climbers go beyond any silly political borders, but its 4 states vs. 1 province, or island in this case. Way to go Gareth!

Thanks guys. It is good to be part of a positive competitive crowd. Keep up the hard work Ryan, it will be your turn next time. Thanks for your good spirit Dan, i will try my best to live up to the high standards that you have imprinted at the ITCC for the PNW.
Well done Kathy and i'll see you next year.
Gareth

It was a good comp. I had two friends that I work with also compete for the first time, and they did well, one got first in the throwline (the only 20) and third in the speed climb.
The events had many alternate routes possible so everyone had to do some figuring. It was fun to watch people try different things.
Many thanks to all the people who made it happen, you did an awesome job.
Congrats to Gareth! This is the second time Gareth has won the PNW title.
I'm going to volunteer as a set-up tech at the next ITCC.
I hear they know how to have fun.
Cheers Dan

hey kathy. good to see you and dan are still sailing through the trees. i'm back from new york and hope to compete again in the future. i was trying to remember the title and author of the tree physics books you have... the picture books kinda like a kid's book only crazy physics talking of sheer and such. hope to see you two soon. -amy
