Did a crane job yesterday at our local chamber of commerce. 40-50 foot Spruce fell over in a windstorm on Friday and we were called in to remove it. The building is on the main drag so it was pretty high profile. We made the local news (which is funny because it was a very straightforward, 1 pick removal in a parking lot) and it was on the front page of our local paper. As a business owner, I was stoked for the publicity. Paper came out today, crane removal is the main photo on the front page and we did not even recieve a mention. I was pissed but eve more so because this is the second job of ours in two months that the paper deemed newsworthy and where we received no mention whatsoever. I sent the paper a note. Let me know what you think.
Goddamn IPad. Won't let me copy and paste it.
Rant interrupted, I'll finish when my wife brings the computer back.

Hahahahahahaha.

At the rantus interruptus.

Bummer on the paper snub.

I had my picture in the paper a while ago, with no info about me or company. Just a caption saying "climber gets high in tree"...thanks

Then, they wouldn't even send me a good copy of the picture. Wankers

I'll bet THAT quote got you tons of work!

Why not just write it up yourself and give it to em?

If you leave it to them to tell your own story, whose fault is it if it's not what you want?

PS If you had used your crane for something good, like pulling the tree to vertical so you could guy, prune and anchor it, that might nave been newsworthy. Heck it coulda gone viral!

I'm going to have to disagree with the idea that standing the tree back up would have been a good idea. Very, very high traffic area and a trashed root plate. Half the roots had snapped clean at the base after the wind event and subsequent snowfall and subzero temperatures. A few of the larger roots had barber chaired 3-4 feet up the trunk. Hell, half the reason we took it in one pick is because it was unstable, despite being propped up by a building. I'm all for tree preservation Guy, but there are situations in which I unequivocally advocate removal.
If I still worked for someone else, I wouldn't really mind about the paper snub. But it's a small town (sub 10,000) and we're a new company just establishing a reputation. A high profile job like that, however simple and straightforward is gold for us. I still can't seem to paste the email I wrote the paper this afternoon but I attempted to be professional and not let how royally pissed I was shine through.

Obviously only you knew the complete situation of the issues that led to removal.
That could've been I good idea if feasible .
Maybe doing a write up on plant health care type things people can do for their trees by hiring yourself to avoid things like trees blowing over would be good to try and link it all together with the newspaper . I know Wyoming is one of the windiest places I've ever been.

Every year our local paper has a front page photo and story about putting up the X-Mas tree in front of city hall and they have always mentioned the name of the company doing the work (always the same company). This year the owner passed away and I've heard someone took over the company but the phone number was changed. I was hoping to get the name from this years article, but wouldn't you know it...not a mention. It must be one of those "who you know things".

My least favorite joke: "So you get high on the job all day?"

Must've been a big blow! Trunk damage like that is a whole other story.

Good instinct, holding that letter to the editor in Drafts and rethinking the role you want to play. Not too late to bring good news to print instead of whinging. Use the fallen tree story as an example for tree owners to get good pruning done, for instance. With photos of your crew doing exactly that.

Find a tree at a school that needs load reduction, and do it pro bono. Send a related piece to the PTA newsletter--VERY good audience there. don't be sour--make lemonade!

My Answer #37: "Yeah, being in the treetops is a natural high--try it out!"

We recorded 83 miles per hour in town and 112 in a small community about 20 miles away. The next day the temperatures dropped below zero and we continued to get winds of about 60. Wyoming is a tough place for trees.
Squeaky wheel gets the grease I guess. The paper is writing a story on trees/me. I just hope I get to look over the article before it goes to print.
