Newb needs help

hello I'm new to the site...been climbing for 5 years only Spurs :( I trim right of way. I'm sick of doing things back asswards and even if i get flak for it I would like to do things right apparently it's not "cool" to climb spurless here...Anyway I want to continue to do this for a living and someday work for myself and I would like to teach myself to climb spurless. Mostly conifers here so I think srt would be a good choice, I could be wrong...anyway I am going to place an order from tree stuff, I have a rope wrench, haas and cmi foot ascender in my cart but can't decide on a rope or hitch cord. Does anyone have any advice...anything would help...thanks
 
I don't have much experience with the hitch climber system but what I know is that Teufelberger works close together with the Treemagineers and for their CEClimb they combine Tachyon 11,5 mm with Ocean Polyester 8 mm resp. T-Vee Safety Blue 1/2" with Ocean Polyester 10 mm.

If I search in this forum for Ocean Polyester then I have the impression that the professionals also like the combination with Tachyon.

Tachyon is a really solid rope that works well with the wrench. It also works well in doubled rope, so you can go back and forth, which can be good for an SRT beginner. That said, any of the Yale 11.7 mil lines would probably do just as well.

New England fly is also a good versatile choice. It also happens to be really inexpensive.

As far as cordage, it is somewhat trial and error, find what works for you and the rope you choose. I have had a lot of luck with 8 mil armor prus. I am a 200 lb fella. Treestuff also has a grab bag of cordage for sale, so you could try five or six out, see what you like. Never can have too much cordage
 
Thanks for the advice... I think I'm going to get tachyon and armor prus 8mm...I'm a little confused with the lengths. I've only climbed with a blakes so I'm unsure what length I need for a vt or any of the other hitches used with the hitchclimber. Any thoughts on a good length to start with?
 
I would order cordage rather than a spliced eye 2 eye so that you can play with lengths. I also run the 8mm Armor Prus and I like a short hitch for my VT. 26" or 28". I run 3-4 wraps and 2 braids but it's important to figure out what works for you. Will you be running a friction saver? That will make a big difference. I'd look at the Yale Arrowfrog at treestuff. It's one of those 11.7 mm Yale lines which are great and its on sale. Order tonight and get 14% off your order. What parts are you from where you get flack for climbing spur less? I'm from New Orleans and still run into tree guys who are very surprised when they see me do trims without gaffs.

You are right to want to do things the right way. If you get real good with a throw line and start climbing ropes instead of trees your job will get easier and faster. Set your tie points very high and temporarily leave a few small stubs on longer branches you are going to have to walk out on.

I use Hrc chord at about 30" on 11.7 mm Yale. I also have other cordage in my bag. It was said before but try a few different ones tied up with double fishermans at different lengths. Double fishermans also cinch down on your carabiner more, so it won't slide down the spine on you.

I'm in southern oregon...on a crew of ex loggers who don't really care for trees. So it can be a little discouraging at times when you want to do things right. I know it's going to take some time to get efficient with ropes. I think it will pay off because none of the tree company's around me trim spurless to my knowledge.
 
Michoacan...good reliable knot basically a closed blakes...can get some mean bite when loaded... just massage the wraps after unloading and you will be good.....climb on
 
Kudos to you for bettering yourself and our trade. It can be difficult to work with others that don't want to progress. My advice is: be respectful of your co-workers, nobody likes a show off. And low and slow. I was trained by an old school climber and progressed from there. It was difficult to try new techniques but I got there slowly. For rope I like vortex, and 10mm amorpruss 30" eye to eye. Ditto on the michoacan(?). Also like the three wrap, three braid vt.
