Hi,

My name is Brad and I am new to the forum and to the industry. I am looking for some advice on tools and methods for splicing.
As far as tools are concerned I have been doing some online research and it appears that there are two camps; traditional fids and the Brion Toss splicing wand . . . which should I start with? In addition if using the wand which size is best suited to splicing climbing lines, lanyards, and prusik cord.
As far as methodology goes I know that most rope manufacturers post instructions for splicing their inventories, but is it worth picking up a book or dvd on the subject. Once again I have heard that Brion Toss has a book and dvd out . . . are they worth it? Thanks for the help.

Hi, the best way to learn is basic fids, screw drivers can be made pointy on a grinding wheel.

Piano wire is the cheap way to do what the wand does, and copper wire salvaged from cable is good way to learn.

Keep your costs down, that way its not a non-profit thing to do.

Good luck. :)

For starters, don't get any fids or the wand. The prices quickly add up to well over the cost of a few splices. Honestly, most beginner splices do 1-4 splices then realize its too hard. Their tools sit there forever as they realize $25 for an eye is a GOOD DEAL.

Start with DIY wire fids. Everything else you can get at target. Masking tape, measuring tape, sharpies and half decent scissors.

YES- get the DVD and toss splicing book. There is TONS of good info in both of those that will save you many hours of trial and error.

If you do a few splices and you're hankering for more, The Toss Wand > push fids any day. I use both.

I've made fids using aluminum tubing with one end cut at a steep angle and sanded smooth and rounded all edges. One that I made will fit a wire fid thought so I can use it sort of like a getto toss wand, it works great on hollow braids.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I ended up getting a set of fids from Samson. I'm going to start out with that and make some wire fids out of piano wire and see where I end up.

Thanks for the info guys. I have successfully completed a 4" eye splice on Yale Dynasorb and a tight carabiner eye on Samson stable braid; 5/8" and 1/2" respectively. When I get the pictures uploaded I hope you guys will tell me what you think.

Dumb question.
How do you use the piano wire? Send it through doubled over? And attach the taper to it and pull it back? How do you attach the taper to it?

Oroboros,

You got it. Attach it well to a handle. Here is slightly larger than piano wire set up Rick the real Deal made for me.

Just put some of the strands to be pulled through. Them off the rest.

How much? Just enough;)

Thanks Tony. I'm still unsure how the tip of the bury is attached to the wire. Do you fold the tip over the wire and tape it back on itself?
The part of the rope that would get stuffed into the back of a hollow fid. how is that attached to the wire?

Just put some of the strands in the bend in wire. All of them will be hard to pull through, to little and it will not grab.

Carefully pull when you start. Once the wire and strands get into the bury they will hold tight.

Tape just gets in the way. On a real loose bury, like cover through core of a double braid, I find the wire fid does not work so well. Not enough tension to hold squeeze the wire. In these cases,I will just use a push fid.
