Say what you will about the pay, but the position is a great opportunity. I came from the private side (25 yrs) and if your interests are Arboriculture at every level, this is it. As with any professional position, we can talk about compensation, but you should bring something to the table worth talking about, not how good of a climber you are, but rather, "What kind of an Arborist are you?".

Anybody interested in expanding their experience and knowledge, will have a great time on our 200 acre campus, managing 3500 +- trees. Top notch equipment and experience backing you. Pest/planting/removal/pride trimming/ crane work/spades/fert./ the list goes on.......incredible crew in an incredible place.

Contact me anytime!

Roger

Nope none taken fellas....;)

I realize the advertised compensation isn't "industry standard", but what a great opportunity for the right person. Plenty of room for growth and learning, so if your even considering this as an option, it is worth tossing in a resume.

13 dollars an hour? That is part of what's wrong with our profession; my last job before self employment paid 17.50 an hour. In 1992.
Jobs that pay like this reduce the arborist to the same pay grade as a lawn mower. All the while having to possess much more knowledge ,skill and exposure to danger. Last I checked Bozemanwas an expensive place. You can't eat the scenery. Yes it's wages like this that keep this an "industry" as opposed to a profession. Get a clue MSU!

Skew*

One can't get too hung up on the "$13", that is the starting point and pay is something we fully embrace as something we WILL Likely be talking about with the successful candidate.

Regarding your degradation of value: Yes I agree our value is challenged everyday and as long as there is somebody willing to do our work cheaper, we are devalued. I have struggled with this my whole life when friends go out and do a little job here and there at a rate of $20 an hr. and their justification is "they are making their wages". Never mind the cost of equipment, the insurance, the risk, etc........ that they are pitching in the trash and acclimating folks, thus devaluing each and every one of us that have worked hard to establish value in our profession.

I agree you can't eat the scenery......nor do benefits pay the bills or tax breaks that come at the end of the year. Lol!

I cannot disagree with any of you regarding wages, but I can say there is room to talk for the right person and if you haven't got yourself into the hole a mile deep, what a great opportunity. If it doesn't fit for you, that's ok. We are looking for some longevity and somebody to fit our team.

Btw:Contrary to the feelings of wages, we have seen applicants from here and if your thinking about applying, don't sit on your hands too long, we will fill it soon.

Keep your line tight, mind sharp and stay safe!

I just would like to add that most tree companies I've worked for do not offer any kind of benefits(health insurance, short term disability, long term disability, life insurance, retirement, and paid vacation). Typically when a company does offer benefits, it equates to anywhere from an additional $5-$10/hour. I would assume that MSU offers great benefits as a state institution, so the pay would really be closer to $18-$23/hour if that holds true.

Nail on the head Ladybird!
The benefits package is pretty darn good. Plenty of paid time off, comp or overtime options, med. and the best retirement match I have yet to encounter. And the tuition waiver is pretty big too! 100% for the employee and 50% for your kiddos.

What's that worth?

great opportunity, yes to practice those technics and let your passion out. but roger this is 100% insulting to meet you guide lines for the PAY. please all the established companies offer benefits health retirement of some level. time is money. ok ill tell my family were going to eat saltine crackers and drink water from the hose for many years now but don't worry your tuition will be 50%. if you want to fill the position don't "hide" the potential pay for the right person. your asking by your " demanded requirements " for the right person, show them what there gonna get. not the barter system of i give you everything we can write off for taxes. i heard of something like this one time it was like dangling a carrot in front of donkey. hmmmmm..

Wow!
Beauty is, you are free to apply or not and by no means are there any obligations to accept the position should it be offered to you. With that said....for those that are interested........ http://www.montana.edu/hr/documents/Benefits/MSUCLASSIFIEDBENEFITSPACKAGE.pdf

I'll take the job if you let me transplant the trees to Missoula.

I mean, the wage isn't the worst of it; you'd be asking me to become a Bobcat.

Hardy har, eh? That was a little school spirit there, but neither one was my school. I had lots of friends go to Missoula, so I had to put in with them. One of my friends did play football at MSU, but I think it was a losing season, so I won't mention any names. :(

But I might have someone who can help fill that job? He's a fat young groundman with a piss poor attitude, but lots of room to grow and improve. He'll sit in the truck while you work outside (my personal favorite peeve) and he prefers not to "look up" when you're in the tree as it cranes his neck in an uncomfortable manner.

He's good with the $13/hr, but will need lodging, which I assume is included? And a quick note, full disclosure: He may be a sex offender of some sort, but nothing really bad - but just to be safe, don't ever drink something he hands you unless you saw him open it first.

Oh, and any knots he claims to know aren't real, they're made up on the spot. Lots of loops and bends and such, but no actual function, as it relates to tree work.

(And yes, I could have edited that last post to include this, but I'm trying to boost my count.)
