Massively Stupid Move

On what planet is this a good method of demolishing a 300ft+ smokestack?

Earth it seems -

Most people don't know that excavator cabs are not ROPS/FOPS certified (Roll Over Protection System/Falling Object Protection System) the way dozer and wheel loader cabs are. A dozer you can flip 10 times, and if you're wearing your seatbelt, you'll walk away from it. Excavators have just a thin sheet metal cab to keep the heat in and the dust and noise out. A lot of excavator operators have been killed in boneheaded moves like this.

I always cringe when I see an excavator making the final "cut" when notching down a smokestack or silo. I've taken down a ton of old silos, grandpa taught me how to drop the first one when I was 11 or 12. Pretty simple method, works by hand or with machinery. We'd notch the bottom of the silo, leaving 3 pillars supporting the whole thing, with one of those pillars in the direction of desired fall. Imagine the silo sitting on top of a 3 legged stool. Kick a leg and it's coming down. To said pillar, we'd attach a loop of logging chain longer than the silo is tall and use the truck, tractor, horses, etc to pull until that pillar gives out and the silo topples.
