Mark's new Stihl ad.

Mark\'s new Stihl ad.

What a cool picture!
What's that a Black Walnut?
It looks like Marks climbing on an SRT setup, with a Munter Hitch above a prussic, is that right? Looks like a good idea, hows it work for you?
Just so I'm not totally out of character, putting a few inches between your lanyard and climbing rope wouldn't hurt. :)

Re: Mark\'s new Stihl ad.

Hey Mike!

That's actually a Black Oak. The sky was blue too, so I guess the tree might have been "touched up" too? Nick was there, he can tell you the same.

That is a FP hitch (or Vt/XT) with a meunther above it on a short strap. I use that setup when the Rope Guide won't fit around the trunk any more. It works really good. A lot of control with just one hand. The idea is being able to rappel in an emergency with only one hand. I like it. I've been doing it for at least 10 years or more. It's auto-locking too.

That shot is a little deceiving. That log as actually about 16' long, so the two lines are a "few" more inches apart than they apear. I usually keep them pretty close though. Just my way I guess?

Re: Mark\'s new Stihl ad.

Looks like they picked a good shot. I guess they only had like a thousand shots to choose from!

What's up with that gray sky? At Aspen we only worked on blue-skied days/forum/images/graemlins/coolsun.gif. I wish the photo would've depicted reality at least a little bit!

Re: Mark\'s new Stihl ad.

Quercus Kelloggi ? hmm Bark looks right , but the sap wood and heartwood are really defined compared to the Black oaks we have around here . It does look like blk Walnut though, except for the bark. We have some monsters to .I will have to take some photoes for ya .

I will be taking down a large Black Oak this weekend and will take some photoes to show you the difference in trunk wood .

Thanks
Greg

Re: Mark\'s new Stihl ad.

Mark, thanks for wearing chaps in the tree even though it's not required by ANSI(yet). Is this a personal preference of yours, company policy, or just something you do when in the public eye in order to set a good example?

Re: Mark\'s new Stihl ad.

Raven,

I use chaps or pants in about 90% of my removals. The only time I waiver is in the summer heat. Then I try to justify the risk of overheating and what types of cuts (positioning wise) and how many will be made. Stihl never asked me. They asked to see what I uaually would wear (for colors and such) and they said go for it. They are a great bunch of people. I asked if they wanted me to wear a new -cleaner pair of chaps and they said no, nothing fake or forced.

I have some other pants that I like now as well. The new SIPS are working very well for me.

Re: Mark\'s new Stihl ad.

mark, have you seen the new stihl trousers that are coming out over here next year? As you don't need them you may not have seen them but they look really good.

Re: Mark\'s new Stihl ad.

No, I only saw them at the APF show a few weeks ago. All the guys from Treevolution were doing a demo for stihl and posing around in them! They are black or at least very dark grey and don't have any fancy lettering or stiching like the SIP ones. Very smart, you could wear them in the pub without everyone knowing what you do for a living, altough the saw dust pouring out of the pockets while buying a pint usually gives it away.

Re: Mark\'s new Stihl ad.

Mark,
That is a good ad. It is tough to really tell from the angle of that pic, but about where on your body do you make the cut? It looks like it is near waist high. when I work with a crane I cut high, about at my neck so I've got plenty of room and can quickly duck out of the way if I need to.

Re: Mark\'s new Stihl ad.

Yeah, I see a lot of guys choose to do it like that. There's no standards on it, so I guess it's where you feel comfy? I personally like to stand up high and cut just above waist level but below my neck. I don't like to run saws too close to the vitals /forum/images/graemlins/ooo.gif Like I said, you need to feel comfy with your cuts or you will be too nervous to work safely.

Been curious about your set-up. When you say [ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ] Do you mean that the vt/xt is on your lanyard? And with the meunther, is it just attached via a running bowline? Or am I missing something? With what ever answer, I'll probably have more Q's to follow.

This is my set-up currently. See attachment.*

Re: Mark\'s new Stihl ad.

Well, what I really mean is that I am using the lanyard for my leverage and my main attachment to work from. Then, I choke the climbing line off below the lanyard (above or below a block if used) with a running bowline. Then I use a meunther or figure eight rappelling device above or below my friction hitch (VT< XT...). This way, your hitch is the auto-lock and the meunther or 8 takes the heat when rappelling. Clear enough?
