License and insurance please?

So no I'm not a cop pulling you over. But what's the type of license and insurance you need to start your own tree business? How much does it run you and what company's are there out there that deal with this kind of thing.

Well, you can operate a business in Canada with a business license, normally any incorporated town or city will require their own license to operate in town.
There are many private insurance companies that will cover your liability against public injury or property damage, in addition you can have your equipment insured against theft and fire. You should NOT even consider making money cutting trees without insurance! You will require WCB for anyone involved in the work, ironically as a self employed individual you are not required by law to pay into WCB for yourself?! But... it would be unwise to not have private coverage. The reason this exists is because WCB base the payout on a claim on the Net income ( after the sole proprietor has paid his expenses ) many small businesses that prefer to write down expenses against income seemingly show little or no actual income. As a result you would not get much if any income from a WCB injury claim.
I hope I have given you some useful information.

I believe the actual requirements vary depending on where you will be doing business. Around here it is pretty minimal in my opinion. Only requirements are to attend a 4hr class every three years, show proof of general liability ins. (I think min. amount is $100,000. But I carry $1 million so I can't remember for sure) and proof of worker's comp if you have employees.

I have insurance based on the maximum value of the properties I work around. In my case 3 million for an expensive waterfront home.

Licensing is dependent on your service area. We are based out of PA and don’t need a business license only a sales tax license. But.... we work 30-40% in a neighboring state. We have to have a state/county and a city license to work there. This way they now have a way to connect to my income, and collect employer and income taxes.
Many types of insurance needed. Commercial auto, general liability and inland marine to list a few. First two are obvious but the inland policy covers all the equipment not under the commercial auto ie chipper, stumper, skid steer etc...... also the big expensive insurance is workers comp if you intend on hiring. Our state rate here is 38% of pay rolll

Or was that directed at the original post?
Sorry, that was not directed at you Stephen., but at the OP. It was my feeble attempt at being a smart-ass (what is insurance/license).
I for one have been enjoying your contributions around here lately.

JT, in WA State, the Dept of Labor and Industries has a web link on their site that tells all you need to know. I'd look at your state government's similar organization, as well as county and city. County you might need something. City is often an add-on to the state stuff...A City business license (which means I'm legal and I pay the city 0.1% of my gross revenue from within the city.
