Leaky altec cylinder

The lift cylinder for the upper boom on my altec lrv is weeping. I called altec twice and have yet to hear from the service guy going on 6 days. I’m nervous about using it being what could happen if the seal blows out. I’ve basically put it out of service. Should I look at driving it hours to their garage?

I'm no hydraulic expert, but as someone who has run all sorts of cylinders for years and seen many of them leak, I've never known of any relationship between leaking cylinders and cylinders failing. Seems like they all leak at some point or another, then it's just a question of getting them repacked.

One of my workers claims to have seen a seal blow out on a bucket working for a shady outfit in my state. He said the bucket hit the ground. I’m not sure what make it was but I’m still leery of this outcome.

Should you run it prob not but have I run buckets with leaky cylinders? Yes yes I have.
Have they blown out? Nope
have they leaked more? Yup
We never go to altec or high ranger to rebuild cylinders hydraulic shop all the way. We have good relationships with a lot of people so we normally get our stuff done fast so not sure how long normal turn around is but we get stuff same day or next day, as long as we give them a heads up so they can order parts if need be.

I just had my lower cylinder on my bucket rebuilt a month ago after noticing it weeping, if you have a good hydraulic shop in the area take it there get them to do it. Place I took mine tested it and gave me a copy of the test. I didn’t want to take any chances got it repaired ASAP. Getting the outriggers done as we speak! Don’t ya love big equipment !

It most definately does not have to sit in line waiting for the one or two techs that can repack a cylinder...find a hydraulic shop or private outfit that works on that sort of things...seals can be measured and replaced saving thousands over a "kit" from the manufacturer. Good luck...too bad you're so far from ohio.

There’s a place I deal with that rebuilds hydraulics. I didn’t know if I had to have altec do it since it’s for life support. I’m not sure how I’m gonna get that cylinder off since it’s 12 deer up and weighs probably 400 pounds or so.

I’m taking the truck out of services Monday and having a diesel shop nearby repack it, do an alignment, and some other stuff. They said they’d take less then a week.

I had a leak in my out rigger and on my Altec bucket truck I had my shop man rebuild the outrigger in 6 hours no leaks great job it was very easy job cost parts o rings from Altec $162.00 labor $120.00 total cost $282.00

I just had the cylinder on my lower boom rebuilt, the shop took it off of the truck for me. The price was very reasonable as well. I wouldn't hesitate to pay a little extra for them to remove it, unless you have an easy setup for holding the boom up during the repairs such as a crane.

The ram is junk since the chrome is starting to flake. Replacement ram is weeks away and a new cylinder is 2700 bucks. We are getting a whole new cylinder.
